Bengaluru: Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) continued its steady run in the Indian automotive market, reporting 33,128 units sold in May 2026, registering a 7% year-on-year growth compared to 30,864 units sold in May 2025. The latest figures include 30,574 domestic sales and 2,554 export units, highlighting strong demand both at home and overseas.
While the Indian auto market has seen its share of ups and downs this year, Toyota appears to have found a comfortable cruising speed. In fact, exports grew by an impressive 61% year-on-year, proving that Toyota’s vehicles are not just winning hearts in India but also finding admirers beyond the country’s borders.
The company’s domestic sales rose by 4%, reflecting continued demand for popular models such as the Innova HyCross, Fortuner, Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Glanza. Toyota’s expanding portfolio and strong reputation for reliability continue to play a significant role in attracting buyers across segments.
One of the biggest highlights for the Japanese automaker was crossing the milestone of 300,000 Strong Hybrid Electric Vehicle (SHEV) sales in India. It’s a significant achievement for a technology that Toyota has championed for years. In simple terms, while some manufacturers are debating the future of mobility, Toyota’s hybrids seem to be quietly collecting customers one fuel-efficient kilometre at a time.
Commenting on the performance, Sabari Manohar, Executive Vice President, Sales-Service-Used Car Business, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said the company’s May sales reflected positive market acceptance of Toyota products and the overall ownership experience. He noted that sustained demand across the portfolio highlights customer preference for quality, reliability and advanced technologies.
He further emphasized that crossing the 3 lakh SHEV sales milestone demonstrates the growing acceptance of hybrid technology and cleaner mobility solutions in India. According to him, the achievement reinforces Toyota’s commitment to sustainable mobility through its multi-pathway strategy.
The growth story becomes even stronger when viewed over a longer period. During the January-May 2026 period, Toyota sold 170,322 units, compared to 146,021 units during the same period last year, translating into a robust 17% growth. Domestic sales during the five-month period rose 16% to 157,225 units, while exports increased 20% to 13,097 units.
With hybrids gaining traction, SUVs continuing to dominate buyer wish lists and exports accelerating, Toyota enters the second half of 2026 with considerable momentum. If the company’s sales chart were a dashboard, the fuel gauge would be comfortably full and the “check engine” light nowhere in sight.
