Toyota Innova Crysta review: The Undisputed King of Comfort and Reliability

The Toyota Innova Crysta, a renowned Indonesian MPV, initially launched in 2004, presents its second-generation facelift variant as of 2023. This model, exclusively available in diesel, starts at an ex-showroom price of 20 lakh, with the top model priced at 25.68 lakh. The variant in focus, the Innova Crysta ZX, precedes the third-generation Innova Hycross, starting at 19 lakh.

Offering both 7 and 8-seater configurations, the Innova is also known as the Kijang Innova and Venturer in certain markets. As one of India’s most popular MPVs, over 10 lakh units have been sold domestically. Its name, inspired by the English word “innovate,” underscores Toyota’s commitment to innovation. Toyota offers a 3-year or 1 lakh km warranty on the Innova, extendable up to 5 years or 2.20 lakh km.

This generation, codenamed AN140, is assembled in countries including India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia, and was designed by Adam Ty Dean Smith and Anthony Chin-Pang Cheung. Toyota markets it as a crossover MPV, featuring a distinctive black and chrome radiator grille, automatic LED projector halogen headlamps with LED clearance lamps, and electrically adjustable and retractable outside mirrors equipped with welcome lights and turn indicators.

The vehicle measures 4.7 meters in length and 1.8 meters in height, with a kerb weight of approximately 1700 kg. It boasts a five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating, rear-wheel drive, and is equipped with 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. Additional wheel options include 16-inch alloys and steel wheels, with disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear, complemented by 215/55 R17 94V Bridgestone Turanza T001 radial tubeless tires.

Available in attitude black mica, among other colors, the Innova is built on Toyota’s Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) platform, shared with the Fortuner and Hilux. It includes rear sensors, two drive modes (Eco and Power), and although an electric version was tested, it has not been launched.

The Innova Crysta also offers a petrol engine and automatic transmission option, though not available in India. Its Toyota Global Outstanding Assessment (GOA) body ensures crash safety, and the suspension system has been enhanced for smooth rides on rough roads, featuring pitch and bounce control.

For safety, it comes equipped with 7 SRS airbags, ABS, EBD, brake assist, wireless door lock, vehicle stability control, hill start assist, and sensors at both ends, alongside 3-point seatbelts. The Toyota i-Connect system allows for smartphone app integration to access various car features.

The Innova Crysta offers an array of accessories, each with a 1-year warranty, and features interior options such as brown genuine and synthetic leather mix upholstery, black color, and fabric upholstery options. It includes one-touch tumble second row seats, indirect blue ambient lighting, a foldable seatback table with a cup holder, an easy slide front passenger seat lever, an 8-way power adjustable driver seat, sliding and reclining front seats, and a tilt and telescopic steering column.

The vehicle boasts a Toyota R151 5-speed manual transmission, automatic climate control AC, an 8-inch Smart Playcast capacitive touchscreen infotainment system supporting Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a cooled upper glovebox, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with wood finish. It also features phone, infotainment, volume, and voice control buttons on steering, a 3D design instrument cluster with a TFT multi-information display showing various vehicle metrics.

Powered by a 2393 cc, Inline-4 cylinder, turbocharged, Toyota 2GD-FTV diesel engine, it delivers 147 horsepower, 343 Nm of torque, offers a fuel efficiency of 15 kmpl, and has a 65-liter fuel tank.
