BMW iX Review: The Epitome of Electric Luxury and Advanced Technology in a Stylish SUV

The BMW iX, a German luxury SUV, was launched in 2021, and the model you see is the first generation variant. It is available only in an electric version with the xDrive50 model priced at an ex-showroom rate of 1.39 crore. The vehicle comes equipped with a Sport Package and a complimentary 22 KW Wallbox charger.

Design and Assembly

The BMW iX is designed by Domagoj Dukec, Lee Chung-Kyo, and Shuai Feng. It boasts a length of 5 meters, a width of 2 meters, and a height of 1.7 meters. The SUV’s assembly takes place in Dingolfing, Germany. Its codename is I20, and it features a distinctive aluminum spaceframe chassis, which is both lightweight and robust.

Performance and Powertrain

The BMW iX runs on BMW’s 5th generation eDrive technology, making it the first purpose-built electric car by BMW since the i3. It includes an electric all-wheel-drive system with variable torque distribution powered by electric motors on both front and rear wheels. The SUV features a 111.5 kWh lithium-ion battery, producing 523 horsepower and 765 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0-100 kmph in just 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of 1 kmph with a range of 635 km.

Charging and Efficiency

Charging options include an 11 kW AC charger (11 hours for a full charge), a 22 kW Wallbox charger (5.5 hours for a full charge), a 50 kW DC charger (70% in 97 minutes), and a 195 kW DC charger (70% in 35 minutes). BMW claims the fifth-generation eDrive technology to be 93% efficient, with the battery featuring an advanced heat management system for optimized DC rapid charging.

Exterior and Safety Features

The SUV’s exterior includes automatic LED headlights with optional Laserlight, rain-sensing wipers, thermally insulated windscreens, and electrically adjustable, foldable, and anti-dazzle outside mirrors. The kidney grille has a self-healing coating to prevent scratches. The iX has a 22-inch 3D polish aerodynamic alloy wheel setup and 275/40 R22 107Y Pirelli P Zero Extra load radial tubeless tires. It’s available in multiple colors including Oxide Grey, Black, Blue, White, and Red.

Safety is paramount with the BMW iX, which has received a 5-star rating from Euro NCAP. It includes features like eight airbags, ABS, brake assist, parking sensors, reversing assistant, parking assistant plus, a 360-degree camera, attentiveness assistant, dynamic stability control, and various other advanced safety technologies.

Interior and Comfort

The interior of the BMW iX is minimalist yet luxurious, featuring a carbon core lightweight construction and brown natural leather upholstery. It includes electrically adjustable front seats with memory, electric lumbar support, active seat ventilation, and massage functions. The SUV is also equipped with a 14.9-inch curved display for infotainment, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, BMW Operating System 8, MyBMW App, and various other advanced connectivity features.

Other interior highlights include an 18-speaker 655 Watt Harman Kardon Surround Sound system, ambient lighting, anthracite headliner, crystal glass application, and a panoramic glass roof with electrochromic shading.

Driving Experience

The BMW iX offers a refined and comfortable driving experience. The steering is precise, and the acceleration is smooth and quick. The adaptive two-axle air suspension provides a flat and controlled ride. However, the iX’s braking at high speeds can feel somewhat slow due to its size and weight.

The vehicle’s sound system, BMW Iconic Sounds, provides a dynamic auditory experience that changes with the accelerator position and speed. The infotainment system, though comprehensive, might take some time to get used to.

Overall, the BMW iX is a luxurious electric car that blends comfort, technology, and performance seamlessly. Despite some minor drawbacks in high-speed braking and the complexity of the infotainment system, the iX stands out as a flagship model in BMW’s electric vehicle lineup, offering a unique and highly desirable driving experience.
