Mahindra XUV400 Review: A Bold Leap into Electrification with Performance, Comfort, and Cutting-edge Technology

Mahindra’s foray into the electric SUV segment marks a significant milestone with the launch of the XUV400, first introduced in 2023. This review delves into the 2024 first-generation updated variant, highlighting its features, performance, and value proposition.

Pricing and Variants
The XUV400 starts at an ex-showroom price of ₹15.49 lakh, extending to ₹17.69 lakh for the top-end EL Pro model, setting a competitive stance in the electric vehicle market. In contrast, its combustion engine sibling, the XUV300, starts at ₹8 lakh, offering a more affordable entry into the Mahindra SUV family.

First Electric SUV
As Mahindra’s inaugural electric SUV, the XUV400 carries the expectations of delivering both performance and sustainability. It comes with a generous warranty of 3 years unlimited kilometers, extending to 8 years or 1.60 lakh km for the battery and motor, ensuring buyer confidence.

Driving Dynamics and Modes
The XUV400 introduces three driving modes: Fun, Fast, and Fearless, each tuning the steering, throttle, and regenerative braking levels to suit different driving preferences, enhancing the driving experience.

Enhanced Features
Significant improvements in MY24 model include upgraded infotainment and air conditioning systems, increased connected car and safety features, establishing the XUV400 as a modern, technology-packed SUV.

Design and Build
Built on the globally acclaimed 5-star GNCAP crash-tested XUV300 platform, the XUV400 boasts a robust design, including features like light-sensing LED projector headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, electrically adjustable foldable mirrors, and a distinctive Twin Peaks logo, among others. Its dimensions and ground clearance are designed to navigate urban and rough terrains efficiently. XUV400 measures 4.2 meters long, 1.8 meters wide, and 1.6 meters tall, with a 200mm ground clearance for tackling rougher terrain. It comes standard with 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, though steel wheels are also available. You’ll find disc brakes on both the front and rear, equipped with 205/65 R16 95H Apollo Apterra Cross tyres. The model you see here is in Everest White, but it’s also available in black, blue, and grey. For a touch of flair, the only dual-tone option features a copper roof.

Performance and Efficiency
The XUV400 is available with a 39.4 kWh or a 34.5 kWh Lithium-Ion battery, paired with a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Electric Motor and Valeo Siemens powertrain system delivering 147 horsepower and 310 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0-100 kmph in 8.3 seconds, offering a top speed of 150 kmph. The range varies between 375 km and 456 km, depending on the battery option, supported by fast charging capabilities. Fully charge in under 7 hours with a 7.2 kW charger, or get an 80% charge in only 50 minutes using a 50 kW DC fast charger. Slower charging is available with a 3.3 kW charger (13.5 hours for a full charge).

Safety and Convenience
For your safety, the car comes equipped with 6 airbags, ABS, EBD, ISOFIX child seat mounting, a tire pressure monitoring system, hill hold assist, a front seatbelt reminder, speed-sensing door locks, impact-sensing door unlocks, an immobilizer, a panic brake signal, a passenger airbag deactivation switch, central locking, passive keyless entry, rear parking sensors, a rear camera, and front seatbelt pretensioners with load limiters. The car features AdrenoX, allowing you to access over 55 car features through a smartphone app. These features include remote control of car flashlights, door locking/unlocking, lamps, a “find my car” function, EV battery warnings, greetings, location of the nearest charging points and Mahindra service stations, vehicle tracking, smartwatch connectivity, over-speed alerts, geo-fence alerts, and many more.

Interior and Comfort
The XUV400’s interior boasts a 10.25-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system supporting wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, smart watch connectivity, voice command, just dial, India Today, Accuweather, Thrillophilia, horoscope, etc. It also gets a 10.25 inch fully digital instrument cluster, electric power steering, shift-by-wire automatic transmission, and a new dual-zone automatic temperature control AC. The leatherette upholstery with copper stitching, 60/40 split folding 2nd row seats, and ample storage options ensure a comfortable and practical cabin space.

Verdict
The Mahindra XUV400 sets a high standard for electric SUVs in its segment, offering a compelling mix of performance, technology, and safety features. Its competitive pricing, comprehensive warranty, and range of features make it an attractive option for buyers looking to transition to electric vehicles.
