Kemp, together with Hyundai honcho José Muñoz, revved up the excitement in Georgia. In a surprise twist, Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) announced they’re putting the pedal to the metal, moving up their production start to Q4 2024, a whole quarter ahead of schedule.
The State Capitol was abuzz with electric vibes as Hyundai and Genesis electric vehicles, including the sleek Ioniq 5 and 6, along with the hydrogen-powered XCIENT Fuel Cell Truck, lined up like futuristic chariots. It wasn’t just any day; the General Assembly declared Feb. 26, 2024, as “Hyundai Day”, marking a historic milestone in the state’s automotive journey.
José Muñoz, the driving force at Hyundai, expressed his gratitude, noting Georgia as their “second home.” He promised a future of job creation and economic prosperity, powered by Hyundai’s investment. Governor Kemp echoed these sentiments, highlighting Hyundai’s role in bringing historic opportunities to Georgians.
Oscar Kwon, president and CEO of HMGMA, shared the excitement, acknowledging the project’s rapid pace and the collaborative efforts that made it possible. The celebration wasn’t just about cars; it was about community, with local officials and company representatives emphasizing the statewide impact.
Hyundai’s investment in HMGMA is a whopping $7.59 billion, promising to create 8,500 direct jobs. Not to be outdone, Hyundai and SK On are building a $5 billion EV battery cell plant in Bartow County, adding another 3,500 jobs to the mix. According to a study, these investments are expected to generate nearly 40,000 jobs and $4.6 billion in individual earnings annually in Georgia.
Education and employment go hand-in-hand at HMGMA, with educational partnerships set to fuel the future workforce. Students completing the Electric Vehicle Professional Technical Certificate (EVP TCC) at local colleges will get a fast lane to employment at HMGMA.
The event also highlighted Hyundai’s commitment to a hydrogen-powered future, with the Xcient Fuel Cell Truck playing a key role in the plant’s logistics. This move is set to boost economic growth and job opportunities in the state.
