Hyderabad/New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki India Limited has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Transport Department of the Government of Telangana to establish 12 Automated Driving Test Tracks (ADTTs) across six locations in the state. The initiative, undertaken as part of the automaker’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, aims to improve road safety by making driving licence examinations more transparent, standardised and technology-driven.
The automated facilities will be established at Ibrahimpatnam and Kondapur in Ranga Reddy district; Uppal, Medchal and Nagole in Medchal district; and Karimnagar.
The tracks will accommodate driving licence applicants for two-wheelers (TW) and light motor vehicles (LMV), while heavy motor vehicle (HMV) testing will be available exclusively at Nagole and Karimnagar.
Cameras, RFID Sensors and Real-Time Analytics to Assess Drivers
Unlike conventional driving tests that depend heavily on human examiners, the automated tracks will use high-definition cameras, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) sensors, real-time analytics and integrated information technology systems to evaluate applicants.
The computerised assessment process will operate according to predefined rules in compliance with the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR), with the objective of reducing human error, subjective judgement and potential bias.
The principle is straightforward: a driving test should be determined by driving ability rather than the examiner’s discretion.
By recording and analysing driving performance electronically, the facilities are intended to provide a more consistent assessment of applicants while strengthening accountability in the licensing process.
Telangana Government Emphasises Safer Roads and Transparent Testing
Welcoming the collaboration, Sri. K Ilambarithi, IAS, Transport Commissioner, Government of Telangana, highlighted the importance of technology in improving driver competence and traffic safety.
“Road safety remains a key priority for Telangana. Through technology, stronger enforcement, and improved driver testing, we are working to build safer roads. We welcome car market leader Maruti Suzuki’s partnership in establishing 12 Automated Driving Test Tracks across 6 locations in the state. These tracks will make driving tests more transparent and efficient, while ensuring that only competent and qualified applicants are awarded driving licenses.”
The initiative reflects Telangana’s efforts to modernise its driver licensing infrastructure and establish more uniform standards for evaluating driving skills.
Maruti Suzuki Highlights Role of Driver Training in Road Safety
Mr. Rahul Bharti, Senior Executive Officer, Corporate Affairs, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said that improving driver competence remains an important part of reducing road accidents.
“Driver skill is key to ensuring road safety. ADTTs bring fairness and transparency, to the licensing process by eliminating human bias. ADTTs will ensure rigorous driver evaluation and promote disciplined driving practices, vital to enhance road safety. Our partnership with the Government of Telangana to deploy Automated Driving Test Tracks is an important step in this direction. We are pleased to contribute to Telangana’s road-safety journey and look forward to deepening this collaboration in the future.”
The collaboration also highlights the expanding role of automotive manufacturers in supporting public road safety infrastructure beyond vehicle manufacturing.
Maruti Suzuki’s Automated Driving Test Network to Reach 98 Tracks
With the proposed Telangana facilities included, Maruti Suzuki’s ADTT network will account for 98 tracks across nine states and two Union territories, according to the company’s state-wise breakdown.
The distribution includes Rajasthan with 25 tracks, Uttar Pradesh with 17, Delhi with 14, Telangana with 12, Tamil Nadu with 10, Bihar with seven, Andhra Pradesh with five, Uttarakhand with four, Haryana with two, and Chhattisgarh and Jammu & Kashmir with one each.
The Telangana agreement represents another step in expanding access to automated driving examinations, particularly as the number of vehicles on Indian roads continues to make effective driver assessment increasingly important.
Over 5.5 Million People Trained and Evaluated Through Road Safety Programmes
Beyond automated testing infrastructure, Maruti Suzuki has established eight Institutes of Driving and Traffic Research (IDTRs) and 19 Road Safety Knowledge Centres (RSKCs) in collaboration with various state governments.
According to the company, these institutions have collectively trained and evaluated more than 5.5 million people from their inception through the financial year 2025-26.
The programmes focus on improving driving knowledge, practical skills and awareness of road safety regulations.
Maruti Suzuki also supports Integrated Traffic Safety Management System (ITMS) projects in Delhi and Haryana, using real-time monitoring and surveillance technologies to assist traffic enforcement authorities and encourage more disciplined driving behaviour.
Additionally, the company provides First Responder training to commercial drivers and other stakeholders through its IDTR network, aiming to strengthen emergency response capabilities following road accidents.
A Step Towards More Consistent Driving Licence Examinations
The proposed automated tracks in Telangana form part of a broader effort to improve driving standards through technology, training and more consistent evaluation procedures.
While automated testing cannot eliminate unsafe driving or guarantee accident-free roads, it can help establish a more objective licensing process in which applicants are assessed against measurable standards.
For Telangana, the significance of the agreement will ultimately depend on the successful implementation of the facilities and their effectiveness in identifying competent drivers. As India continues to expand its road infrastructure and vehicle population, ensuring that motorists possess the necessary skills before receiving a licence remains an essential part of improving road safety.
