Tata Motors and Iveco Group Create €21 Billion Commercial Vehicle Giant With Presence in 130 Countries

Mumbai/Turin: Tata Motors Limited and Italy-based Iveco Group N.V. have formally come together to establish a global commercial mobility enterprise, bringing their combined annual revenues to approximately €21 billion (over ₹2.28 lakh crore). The new business, ranked by the companies as the world’s fourth-largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, will operate across more than 130 countries, combining India’s industrial strength with Europe’s established commercial vehicle expertise.

The announcement, made at a global press conference in Turin, Italy, marks a significant milestone for both manufacturers as they seek to expand their international footprint, accelerate technological development and strengthen their positions in a rapidly evolving transportation industry.

The combined enterprise will have annual sales volumes of approximately 590,000 vehicles, supported by 27 manufacturing facilities, 25 research and development centres, and a network of around 9,300 sales and service outlets worldwide.

With more than 73,000 employees across six continents, the two manufacturers are bringing together complementary product portfolios and industrial capabilities spanning Europe, India, South America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

N Chandrasekaran Outlines Long-Term Global Ambitions

Speaking at the announcement, N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, Tata Motors and Iveco Group, described the combination as the beginning of a new chapter for both organisations.

“We will invest for the long term, enable ideas and capabilities to flow in both directions, and harness our combined scale, reach and talent to shape a future of mobility that is safer, smarter, more connected and more sustainable.”

Chandrasekaran also acknowledged the contribution of the Italian Government, regulatory authorities, employees, shareholders and other stakeholders in helping the companies reach the milestone.

The arrangement is intended to strengthen both businesses through greater cooperation in engineering, sourcing, manufacturing, distribution and emerging mobility technologies.

Iveco Group to Retain Turin Headquarters and Brand Identity

Despite becoming part of a larger global enterprise, Iveco Group will continue to be headquartered in Turin, Italy.

Its existing brands, workforce, industrial operations and organisational identities will remain distinct, with Tata Motors supporting Iveco Group’s established strategy and investment plans.

This approach aims to preserve the strengths of both manufacturers rather than pursue immediate operational consolidation.

For customers, dealers and suppliers, the companies have emphasised continuity. Existing contracts, warranty obligations, aftermarket commitments, captive financing arrangements and business relationships will remain unchanged.

Girish Wagh, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Tata Motors, said the combination creates opportunities for growth without disrupting existing operations.

“Our complementary portfolios, capabilities and geographic strengths provide a strong foundation for growth, while ensuring continuity from day one for customers, dealers and partners.”

The companies intend to explore opportunities for cooperation in engineering, procurement, technology development and distribution while maintaining their established customer networks.

From Small Cargo Vehicles to Heavy-Duty Trucks and Buses

One of the principal advantages of the combination is the complementary nature of the two manufacturers’ product portfolios.

Tata Motors brings a broad commercial vehicle range spanning cargo vehicles from below one tonne to 55 tonnes, alongside passenger transport solutions accommodating between 10 and 51 people.

The Indian manufacturer has an established presence in India and high-growth markets across Asia, the Middle East and North Africa.

Iveco Group contributes expertise in light, medium and heavy commercial vehicles, along with city and intercity buses. Its operations are particularly strong in Europe and Latin America.

Meanwhile, FPT adds substantial capabilities in powertrain engineering, covering on-road and off-road vehicles, marine applications and power generation.

Together, these businesses will be positioned to serve a wider range of commercial transport requirements, from urban goods delivery to long-distance freight movement and public transportation.

The combined portfolio also provides an opportunity to introduce technologies developed by one manufacturer into markets traditionally served by the other.

Electric, Hydrogen and Alternative Fuels Take Centre Stage

Beyond geographical expansion, technological collaboration is expected to become a central pillar of the partnership.

The combined enterprise possesses expertise across conventional combustion engines, natural gas powertrains, battery-electric vehicles, hydrogen technologies and other low- and zero-emission mobility solutions.

This diversified approach reflects the different stages of infrastructure development, regulatory requirements and customer demand across international markets.

While electrification remains an important direction for commercial transportation, the companies recognise that alternative fuels and conventional technologies will continue to serve different applications and regions.

Their combined engineering and research capabilities could help accelerate the development of cleaner commercial vehicles while improving production efficiency and market accessibility.

However, specific timelines for jointly developed vehicles, technology-sharing programmes or new product launches have not been disclosed in the announcement.

Iveco CEO Sees Opportunity for International Growth

Olof Persson, Chief Executive Officer of Iveco Group, welcomed the combination, highlighting the importance of preserving the company’s industrial heritage while pursuing new opportunities.

“This is a defining moment for Iveco Group, and one we approach with confidence and great energy.”

Persson also thanked employees, customers, dealers, suppliers and business partners for their continued trust and support.

For Iveco Group, the relationship offers access to Tata Motors’ capabilities and experience in emerging markets, while Tata Motors stands to benefit from Iveco’s established European operations, engineering expertise and international commercial vehicle networks.

The potential advantages extend to component suppliers, distributors and other industry partners, which could gain access to additional markets through the enlarged business.

A New Chapter in Global Commercial Transportation

The combination comes as the global commercial vehicle industry navigates technological change, increasingly stringent environmental requirements and shifting demands from fleet operators.

For Tata Motors, the development significantly expands its international presence. For Iveco Group, it introduces the backing and resources of a major Indian automotive manufacturer while retaining its European industrial foundations.

The immediate priority will be ensuring operational stability, followed by deeper cooperation in technology, manufacturing and international market development.

With approximately €21 billion in combined revenue, operations in more than 130 countries and an extensive manufacturing and research network, Tata Motors and Iveco Group now possess considerable scale in the global commercial vehicle industry.

Whether that scale translates into stronger competitiveness, faster innovation and sustained growth will depend on how effectively the companies combine their complementary strengths. For an industry where efficiency, technology and reliability matter as much as horsepower, the
