BMW Group India Records Best-Ever First Half as EV Sales Surge 78%

Gurugram: BMW Group India recorded its highest-ever first-half sales in 2026, delivering 9,075 cars between January and June, an increase of 17% from the corresponding period last year, the company said.

The luxury vehicle manufacturer maintained the same growth rate during the second quarter, delivering 4,507 cars between April and June, up 17% year-on-year.

Electric vehicles, long-wheelbase models and Sports Activity Vehicles — BMW’s preferred term for SUVs — were the principal drivers of the performance. The company is also preparing to introduce 14 more products across the BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad brands before the end of 2026.

Hardeep Singh Brar, President and CEO, BMW Group India said, “BMW Group India has delivered its highest-ever sales performance in the first half of 2026. We have delivered 9,075 cars, but beyond this impressive number, what we are really focused on is to continue our steady double-digit growth in an otherwise challenging environment. The +17% growth is a clear reflection of the deep trust our customers place in our brands. Our decisive hold on electric mobility has solidified BMW Group India as the number one choice in luxury EV segment. With a phenomenal +78% growth, every fourth car we sell today is an EV. Furthermore, our customer-centric product strategy continues to pay off, driven by a substantial surge in demand for our executive long wheelbase models and dynamic sports activity vehicles. Building on the thrill of our new launches, we have planned 14 more exciting products across all three brands before year end. We will drive this performance to the next level with a luxury experience that is unparalleled in the segment and matches evolving customer desires. With the commitment of our dedicated team and dealer partners, we are confident of driving the momentum and rewriting success stories for the rest of the year.”

Electric vehicles account for 26% of sales

BMW Group India delivered 2,359 electric vehicles during the first half, representing year-on-year growth of 78%. Electric models accounted for 26% of the group’s total car sales, meaning roughly one in every four vehicles delivered was an EV.

The company said it held a 69% share of India’s luxury electric-vehicle market during the period. The figure reinforces the growing importance of electric cars in the premium segment, where battery-powered models are increasingly moving from showroom attractions to regular customer choices.

Long-wheelbase models gain ground

BMW sold 4,428 long-wheelbase cars during the six-month period, an increase of 24% year-on-year. These models contributed 52% of BMW sales, according to the company.

BMW offers long-wheelbase versions of both sedans and SUVs, targeting customers seeking additional rear-seat space without giving up the performance associated with the brand. Buyers, it appears, are increasingly voting for extra legroom with their wallets.

SUVs contribute 65% of volumes

BMW and MINI Sports Activity Vehicles recorded combined sales of 5,926 units, growing 35% from the previous year.

The category accounted for 65% of total car volumes, highlighting the continued dominance of SUVs in the company’s Indian portfolio. BMW attributed the demand to their road presence, performance and luxury positioning.

MINI sales rise 70%

MINI delivered 504 cars in India during the first half of 2026, registering growth of 70% year-on-year.

The MINI Countryman remained the brand’s best-selling model, followed by the Convertible and Hatch. The Countryman C, introduced in mid-June, has also attracted strong initial demand, the company said.

Limited-run models such as the MINI Cooper S Victory Edition and MINI Convertible JCW Pack were sold out, reflecting customer interest in more distinctive and performance-oriented variants.

BMW Motorrad delivers 2,327 motorcycles

BMW Motorrad delivered 2,327 motorcycles in India during the first half of the year.

Among imported motorcycles with engines above 500 cc, popular models included the BMW S 1000 RR, BMW 900 GS and GSA, and BMW 1300 GS and GSA.

Deliveries of the first batch of the new BMW F 450 GS began at the end of June. The initial allocation was sold out, while bookings for the next batch will open later, the company said.

Eleven products launched, 14 more planned

BMW Group India introduced 11 new products during the first half of 2026. These included the BMW X3 30d, BMW M440i, BMW X6 M60i, MINI Countryman C, BMW F 450 GS and BMW M 1000 R.

The company plans to launch another 14 products across its three brands before the end of the calendar year, maintaining an unusually busy product pipeline even by luxury-car standards.

BMW Group India is also expanding customer engagement programmes such as the BMW M Drift Academy, Women’s Power Drive, BMW Golf Cup, MINI Go-Kart Days and BMW GS Experience.

Its partnerships with the India Art Fair and Kochi-Muziris Biennale will continue, alongside activities organised under the BMW Excellence Club in travel, lifestyle and sport.

Retail network to expand

BMW Group India currently operates 100 sales and service touchpoints across BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad in 40 cities.

Under its Retail.NEXT programme, the company plans to add 19 outlets in 18 cities during 2026. The redesigned facilities are intended to combine vehicle displays, digital technology and customer services within a more contemporary retail environment.

BMW India Financial Services financed one in every four BMW cars purchased using finance during the first half, according to the company.

Its BMW Smart Finance plans offer monthly instalments that may be up to 40% lower, assured buy-back values of up to 73% of the ex-showroom price and flexible options at the end of the financing term.

BMW Group India’s first-half results point to a wider change in the luxury-vehicle market: growth is increasingly being led not simply by traditional premium sedans, but by electric cars, long-wheelbase models and SUVs. With 14 additional launches scheduled, the second half of 2026 is likely to test whether that momentum can remain in the fast lane.
