Honoring the Heroes Behind India’s Wheels
INDIA: In a groundbreaking initiative, the Association of State Road Transport Undertakings (ASRTU), the Bus & Car Operators Confederation of India (BOCI), and the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) have declared January 24th as “Drivers’ Day”. This annual observance is a tribute to the millions of commercial and passenger vehicle drivers who tirelessly ensure the seamless movement of goods and people across the nation.
India’s road transport sector, among the largest in the world, is driven by over 12 million commercial vehicle drivers and countless passenger vehicle operators. These individuals form the backbone of the nation’s economy, connecting rural and urban areas, facilitating commerce, and ensuring mobility for millions. Despite their critical role, they often face challenges such as long hours, limited welfare, safety risks, and inadequate infrastructure.
A Call to Celebrate and Reflect
ASRTU, BOCI, and AIMTC have called upon stakeholders—including state agencies, private operators, and the general public—to acknowledge the contributions of drivers through meaningful gestures like presenting flowers, certificates of appreciation, or organizing community events. The initiative aims to foster respect for drivers and advocate for better working conditions.
Voices of Support
Dr. T. Surya Kiran, Executive Director of ASRTU, remarked:
“Drivers are the lifeline of our transportation network, ensuring the safety and convenience of millions daily. Recognizing their contributions is the first step toward improving their lives and fostering a culture of respect for their invaluable role.”
BOCI President Prasanna Patwardhan highlighted:
“Drivers’ Day is more than a symbolic gesture—it’s a platform to address their hardships, promote their well-being, and equip them with the tools for success. It’s time we give them the dignity they deserve.”
AIMTC President Dr. Harish Sabharwal shared ambitious plans to celebrate the day:
“We are partnering with Lions International Club to provide health camps and free cataract surgeries for drivers. AIMTC is also working toward a ₹5,00,000 insurance cover for drivers, ensuring their safety and welfare are prioritized.”
Drivers as the Engines of Progress
Drivers play a crucial role in India’s development, handling 70% of the nation’s freight and connecting its remotest corners. As India moves toward its vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, improving the lives of these unsung heroes is essential for a safer and more sustainable transportation ecosystem.
