New Renault Duster Hybrid Launched at ₹16.99 Lakh With Formula 1-Inspired Technology

Mumbai: Renault India has introduced its Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 technology in the country with the launch of the new Renault Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160, priced from ₹16.99 lakh. The SUV combines a 1.8-litre petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.4 kWh battery, delivering 160 PS of combined power and an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 29 kmpl. The launch marks Renault’s entry into India’s strong-hybrid SUV segment and offers buyers an alternative to conventional petrol and diesel vehicles without the need for external charging.

Available in three variants — Evolution, Techno and Emotion — the new Duster hybrid introduces technology derived from Renault’s experience in electrification and Formula 1. The company claims the SUV can operate in pure electric mode for up to 80% of city driving, while delivering fuel savings of up to 29% compared with diesel vehicles.

The introduction forms part of Renault Group India’s futuREady India roadmap, aimed at bringing the company’s global technologies to Indian customers while expanding local engineering and product development.

Renault Duster Strong Hybrid: Engine, Power and Performance

At the heart of the new Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 is a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine using Atkinson-cycle combustion technology and a 350-bar direct fuel injection system.

The petrol engine works alongside two electric motors: a traction motor responsible for electric propulsion and a high-voltage starter-generator that manages gear synchronisation, battery charging and energy distribution.

Together, the system delivers a maximum combined output of 160 PS, while the electric traction motor produces peak torque of 208 Nm.

According to Renault, the SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.61 seconds, balancing everyday performance with reduced fuel consumption.

A 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery supports electric driving and stores energy recovered through regenerative braking. The battery features a direct refrigerant-based cooling system designed to maintain performance under varying temperature conditions, including demanding Indian weather.

Renault is offering an eight-year or 160,000 km warranty on the hybrid battery.

29 kmpl Mileage and More Than 1,400 km Claimed Range

Fuel efficiency is one of the biggest talking points surrounding the new Duster hybrid.

Renault claims an ARAI-certified mileage of 29 kmpl, making it one of the SUV’s principal selling points in a market where running costs remain a major consideration.

The company also claims a driving range exceeding 1,400 km, although actual range will depend on driving conditions, vehicle load and other factors.

In urban environments, the E-Tech system can prioritise electric propulsion during low-speed operation and stop-and-go traffic. Renault says this allows up to 80% of city driving to be completed using electric power, depending on conditions.

The company further claims up to 52% better mileage than diesel vehicles in city driving, up to 29% lower fuel costs and 40% lower carbon dioxide emissions per kilometre. These comparisons are manufacturer claims, and their real-world applicability will depend on the vehicles and conditions being compared.

Unlike a plug-in hybrid, the Duster E-Tech does not require an external charging connection. Its battery is replenished automatically through regenerative braking and, when required, power generated by the petrol engine.

For motorists accustomed to diesel SUVs, the appeal is straightforward: potentially lower running costs without adding charging stops to the journey.

Formula 1-Inspired Gearbox Offers 15 Drive Combinations

One of the more technically interesting features of Renault’s E-Tech system is its patented multi-mode automatic transmission, developed using expertise gained through the company’s Formula 1 programme.

The transmission incorporates two electric gears and four petrol-engine gears, enabling 15 different driveline combinations.

Rather than relying on a conventional automatic transmission arrangement, the system coordinates the petrol engine and electric motors to optimise performance, energy consumption and responsiveness.

Renault says the technology draws on more than a decade of electrification research and incorporates expertise from its motorsport operations. The broader E-Tech hybrid system is supported by more than 200 patents relating to transmission architecture, energy recovery, power management and hybrid control strategies.

The Duster Strong Hybrid can automatically operate in six different modes:

  • All-Electric Mode: The petrol engine remains switched off while the electric motor drives the vehicle.
  • Petrol-Only Mode: The petrol engine independently powers the SUV during suitable cruising conditions.
  • Series-Parallel Hybrid Mode: Both the petrol engine and electric motor contribute to propulsion.
  • Series Hybrid Mode: The petrol engine generates electricity for the traction motor driving the wheels.
  • Energy Recovery Mode: The electric motor recovers energy during deceleration and braking.
  • Charging via Petrol Engine: The petrol engine generates electricity to maintain battery charge, including when the vehicle is stationary.

The technology is designed to manage these functions automatically, reducing the need for driver intervention.

Regenerative Braking, B Mode and E-Save Technology

The new Duster Strong Hybrid introduces several features aimed at improving energy management.

A dedicated B Mode in the gear selector increases regenerative braking when the accelerator is released. This allows the system to recover additional energy while slowing the vehicle and can reduce the frequency of brake pedal use in traffic or on downhill sections.

The SUV also features E-Save mode, which preserves battery charge for later use. Drivers can use this function before entering congested urban areas where electric propulsion may be particularly beneficial.

An advanced thermal management system helps regulate battery temperature, while intelligent power distribution continuously determines how the petrol engine and electric motors should operate.

Unlike an all-electric vehicle, the Duster hybrid does not need to be plugged in. Its electrification happens largely behind the scenes, leaving the driver to concentrate on the increasingly complicated business of navigating Indian traffic.

Renault Targets Diesel SUV Buyers in ₹17–20 Lakh Segment

Renault is positioning the Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 as an alternative to diesel-powered SUVs, particularly customers considering automatic transmissions.

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Stéphane Deblaise, Chief Executive Officer, Renault Group India, said:

“With more than one million E-Tech strong hybrid vehicles sold worldwide since 2020, the E-Tech strong hybrid is a proven Renault powertrain technology. Now, we are bringing it to India as part of our futuREady India roadmap. Our approach is to bring to the Indian customers the best of Renault’s global technologies, while developing cars, powertrains and features specifically for Indian needs through our engineering and design centres in Chennai, our biggest outside Europe. The Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 is a clear example of this approach.”

Renault says its global E-Tech strong-hybrid technology has already exceeded one million vehicle sales since 2020, providing the company with an established platform as it expands into India.

Mr. Francisco Hidalgo, Vice President – Sales & Marketing, Renault Group India, highlighted the importance of the hybrid’s pricing in a segment where diesel SUVs continue to attract buyers.

“In the Duster segment, nearly half of all diesel vehicles are sold in the ₹17–20 lakh price band, and that rises to more than 90% for diesel automatics. That is exactly where the Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 comes in. Starting at ₹16.99 lakh, right at the heart of this market, we believe it is the smarter choice for customers considering diesel, combining significantly lower fuel consumption with a quieter, smoother and more sophisticated driving experience, without requiring customers to change how or where they drive.”

The strategy reflects an effort to attract customers who prioritise fuel economy and long-distance usability but may not yet be ready to switch to a fully electric vehicle.

New Interiors and Features for the Duster Hybrid

Alongside its electrified powertrain, the Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 introduces revised interior appointments and additional comfort features.

The range-topping Emotion variant receives new dune brown leatherette seat upholstery, ventilated front seats and six-way power adjustment.

The Techno variant features new desert beige semi-leatherette upholstery, offering a different interior colour scheme.

Renault has also redesigned the headrests to improve the cabin’s perceived roominess.

Other technical features include frequency-dependent damping, intended to improve ride comfort across different road surfaces, and the hybrid system’s battery thermal management technology.

On the exterior, the Duster Strong Hybrid features an illuminated DUSTER logo integrated into the front grille, distinguishing it from conventional versions of the SUV.

The company says the programme is intended to provide greater predictability in ownership expenses and resale value.

Flexible financing options are also available through Renault Finance partners. Customers considering the package should review its eligibility requirements and contractual terms, particularly those governing assured resale value.

A Significant Step in Renault’s India Hybrid Strategy

The arrival of the Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 represents an important development in Renault’s Indian product strategy as manufacturers explore multiple routes towards lower-emission mobility.

While battery-electric vehicles continue to attract investment, strong hybrids offer a different approach by combining electric propulsion with the convenience of conventional refuelling.

For Renault, the Duster provides a familiar SUV nameplate through which to introduce its latest electrified technology to Indian buyers.

With a starting price of ₹16.99 lakh, an ARAI-certified efficiency figure of 29 kmpl and a claimed ability to complete much of urban driving in electric mode, the new Duster hybrid enters the market with a clear proposition.

Its longer-term success, however, will depend on how closely its real-world efficiency, performance and ownership costs match the manufacturer’s claims — and whether Indian diesel SUV buyers are ready to embrace a different kind of powertrain.

The Duster Strong Hybrid may not require a charging cable, but its biggest challenge will be convincing customers that electricity and petrol together can offer a worthwhile alternative to diesel.
