Tesla Roadster Bookings Open in India; Production Set for 2028, Model Y L Gets Performance Upgrade

Tesla has opened reservations for its next-generation Roadster electric sports car in India, with production scheduled to begin in 2028. Alongside the announcement, the American electric vehicle manufacturer has introduced a complimentary Acceleration Boost for its six-seater Model Y L SUV, reducing its claimed 0–100 km/h acceleration time to 4.5 seconds.

The announcement marks another development in Tesla’s expanding Indian operations, combining a high-performance electric sports car intended to showcase the company’s engineering ambitions with a more immediate upgrade to its existing SUV range.

The new Roadster, unveiled in the United States on October 15, draws inspiration from high-performance military aircraft and incorporates technology developed with SpaceX. Reservations are now open in the United States and selected international markets, including India.

Tesla Roadster: Aerospace-Inspired Design and SpaceX Technology

Tesla says the new Roadster takes design inspiration from the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft and the F-35 fighter jet, reflecting the company’s ambition to deliver an unusually performance-focused driving experience.

The electric sports car is positioned above Tesla’s existing Plaid performance models and incorporates SpaceX-developed technology intended to push the boundaries of conventional automotive engineering.

Tesla has also demonstrated experimental capabilities involving aerospace-inspired propulsion systems. However, the production version’s final specifications, regulatory approvals and market-specific availability remain important considerations ahead of its planned introduction.

Production is scheduled to begin in 2028, initially with left-hand-drive vehicles only. This is particularly significant for India, where vehicles ordinarily use right-hand drive. Tesla has not announced a timeline for a right-hand-drive Roadster or confirmed when Indian reservation holders could take delivery.

Indian customers can submit reservations through Tesla’s official Roadster reservation website.

The Roadster has been a long-running project for Tesla, with its earlier next-generation concept first unveiled in 2017. The latest announcement provides a new production target after several delays, although prospective buyers will still have to exercise patience before the vehicle reaches production.

Tesla Model Y L Receives Complimentary Acceleration Boost

While the Roadster remains a future product, Tesla’s Model Y L is receiving a more immediate performance enhancement.

The six-seater electric SUV now offers a claimed 0–100 km/h acceleration time of 4.5 seconds with the complimentary Acceleration Boost, compared with the previously stated 5.0 seconds.

Despite the improved acceleration, Tesla continues to quote a driving range of up to 681 km under the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP).

Actual driving range will vary depending on road conditions, driving style, temperature and other factors.

The Model Y L is designed around family-oriented practicality, with three rows of seating and a cabin intended to accommodate six occupants. The performance upgrade adds another dimension to the SUV’s character without changing its primary role as a spacious electric family vehicle.

It is, after all, not every day that a six-seater family SUV gets an acceleration figure that would have impressed sports-car manufacturers a generation ago.

The Model Y and Model Y L remain Tesla’s two vehicle offerings in India. Tesla also highlights safety assessments from organisations including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Euro NCAP, ANCAP and China’s C-IASI, although ratings differ by model, variant and market.

Tesla Model Y and Model Y L Prices in India

Tesla has retained the announced starting prices for its two electric SUVs, with financing options available for eligible buyers.

ModelStarting priceDown paymentMonthly EMI from
Tesla Model Y₹50,89,000₹6,00,000₹39,990
Tesla Model Y L₹61,99,000₹6,50,000₹49,990

Prices and financing figures are company-announced. EMI offers are subject to applicable financing terms, eligibility and conditions.

Both vehicles are also covered by Tesla’s Refer and Earn programme, which provides incentives for existing customers and new buyers.

Under the programme, existing Tesla owners can earn ₹11,000 in credits for each successful qualifying referral. New customers referred through the programme can receive ₹22,000 off a new Tesla vehicle.

Referral credits can be redeemed against eligible services and benefits, including Supercharging.

Tesla Expands Charging Infrastructure Across India

Alongside its product announcements, Tesla is continuing to develop its charging and ownership infrastructure in India.

According to the company, its charging network currently comprises 20 Supercharger stalls and 28 Destination Charger stalls. Three additional charging sites are planned before the end of 2026.

Tesla also says it has enabled home-charging installations for households across 23 Indian states, supporting customers who prefer to charge their vehicles at home rather than rely exclusively on public infrastructure.

The expansion is particularly relevant to India’s premium electric vehicle market, where the availability of dependable charging facilities remains an important consideration for prospective buyers.

Tesla Test Drives Available in India

Customers interested in experiencing Tesla’s existing vehicles can schedule test drives of the 2026 Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive and the six-seater Model Y L at the company’s experience locations in India.

Bookings can be made through Tesla’s official test-drive website or by contacting its toll-free customer support number, 1800-203-1538.

What Tesla’s Latest Announcements Mean for India

Tesla’s decision to accept Roadster reservations in India reflects its intention to include the country in its international product plans, even as the practical timeline for Indian deliveries remains uncertain.

The Roadster represents the company’s more experimental ambitions, combining electric performance with aerospace-derived technology. The Model Y L, meanwhile, offers a more immediate proposition for buyers seeking electric mobility with family-friendly practicality and stronger acceleration.

Beyond headline-grabbing performance figures, Tesla’s longer-term prospects in India will depend on pricing, charging accessibility, service support and the overall ownership experience.

For now, the Roadster demonstrates where Tesla wants to take electric performance, while the Model Y and Model Y L remain the vehicles through which Indian customers can experience the brand today.
