From Boxes to Pit Boxes — Iron Mountain Digs into McLaren’s Past to Power Its Future

In a collaboration that’s as much about history as horsepower, Iron Mountain — the global heavyweight in information management — has joined forces with McLaren Racing as an Official Partner of the McLaren Formula 1 Team. The mission? To digitally resurrect decades of McLaren’s racing glory, one blueprint, one film reel, and one papaya-tinted memory at a time.

Through its AI-enabled digital platform, Iron Mountain will take on the enormous task of digitising McLaren’s legendary archives. This includes everything from vintage garage photos and dusty race telemetry sheets to pioneering blueprints that once defined the team’s engineering brilliance. Essentially, if Bruce McLaren once scribbled on it, Iron Mountain’s AI will now be giving it a second life — in glorious, searchable pixels.

The partnership ensures that McLaren’s 60-year heritage doesn’t just sit in a filing cabinet like a retired gearbox, but comes roaring back to life as dynamic content — connecting fans and partners across the globe with the unforgettable stories that shaped Formula 1 history.

And Iron Mountain isn’t just about nostalgia. The company will also manage McLaren’s end-of-life IT assets — because even race teams need help when old laptops crash harder than an over-ambitious qualifying lap.

Starting from the 2025 United States Grand Prix, Iron Mountain’s logo will appear on both McLaren race cars — a fitting placement for a company that’s used to handling data at high speeds (though admittedly, not usually at 350 km/h).

Nick Martin, Co-Chief Commercial Officer, McLaren Racing, said:

“Our fans are at the centre of what we do, and we’re thrilled to have Iron Mountain help us bring our story to life. With their expertise, we’ll shine a brighter light on McLaren’s rich history — and maybe even find that missing 1988 gearbox diagram everyone’s been looking for.”

Greg McIntosh, Executive Vice President & Chief Commercial Officer, Iron Mountain, added:

“McLaren represents innovation and excellence — values we share at Iron Mountain. Through our AI-driven platform, we’ll help unlock the full potential of McLaren’s archives, ensuring the team’s legacy continues to inspire generations. Think of it as a digital pit stop for history.”

With this alliance, McLaren’s past meets Iron Mountain’s present — to build a smarter, faster, and infinitely better-catalogued future. Because in Formula 1, every millisecond counts… and apparently, so does every megabyte.
