— Avoids 1.8 Lakh Tonnes of Emissions, Because Even Cars Prefer Trains Now
New Delhi — In a move that proves even India’s most loved car brand enjoys a scenic train ride, Maruti Suzuki India Limited has set a new green milestone by dispatching a record-breaking 5.18 lakh vehicles via Indian Railways in FY 2024-25. That’s one in every four Maruti cars choosing to skip the highway and hop aboard a train instead.
In doing so, the company not only saved itself over 630 lakh litres of fuel (enough to fill an Olympic pool… or several thousand Altos), but also avoided more than 1.8 lakh tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions — because saving the planet is best done one wagon-full of hatchbacks at a time.

“It’s not just about fuel economy anymore,” quipped Hisashi Takeuchi, MD & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited. “We’re focused on carbon economy too. With every car we load on a train, we’re driving toward a greener India – just not literally.”
Since earning India’s first Automobile-Freight-Train-Operator license in 2013 (a title that still sounds cooler than it has any right to), Maruti Suzuki has now cumulatively dispatched 2.4 million vehicles by rail. And no, they didn’t all go to Delhi NCR.
With more than 20 railway hubs and access to 600+ cities — not to mention ports like Mundra and Pipavav — Maruti’s logistics map looks more like a metro plan for a future-ready India. Add to that 40 flexi-deck rakes, each capable of carrying 300 vehicles per trip, and you’ve got a moving car showroom that runs on rails.
The company aims to increase its rail dispatch share to 35% by FY 2030-31. If this continues, don’t be surprised if future Swift deliveries arrive with a ticket stub.
Maruti’s railway romance began on modest tracks in FY 2014-15, and since then, it’s been full steam ahead — growing eightfold in a decade. So, next time you see a train packed with cars zooming past, wave. Chances are, you’re looking at India’s most fuel-efficient express.
Because when it comes to green logistics, Maruti isn’t just keeping track — it’s laying them.
