Kia India Races to 10 lakh Domestic Sales in Record Time

New Delhi, 8th August 2024 – In a historic achievement, Kia India has reached a significant milestone by selling 10 lakh (1 million) units in the domestic market within just 59 months of starting its operations. This makes Kia the fastest carmaker to achieve this feat in India. The company’s flagship model, the Kia Seltos, has been the primary driver of this success, contributing over 48% of the total sales. Other popular models, the Sonet and Carens, account for 34% and 16% of sales, respectively.

Kia’s journey in India began in 2019, and it quickly made a mark with its advanced technology and stylish designs. The brand has defied the stereotype that India is a purely cost-conscious market, with 42% of its sales coming from top-tier trims. Kia has also promoted the adoption of automatic and innovative transmission technologies in India, with three automatic transmissions – IVT, 6AT, and 7DCT – making up 32% of total sales. The introduction of the Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) with the Sonet in 2020 has also been well-received, contributing 15% to sales. Currently, the company’s petrol-to-diesel sales ratio stands at 59% to 41%.

Joonsu Cho, Chief Sales Officer of Kia India, expressed his gratitude and excitement about the milestone. “Achieving 1 million domestic sales is a testament to our continued focus on the Indian market and the need gap of the Indian customers. My heartfelt thanks to all our customers who have shown trust in our brand and made us one of the most loved carmakers in the country,” he said.

Cho also highlighted Kia’s commitment to innovation. “With our latest technology, design, and in-car features, we constantly challenge established practices. We will soon launch our global flagships in India this year, followed by a home-grown new model,” he added.

Kia’s annual sales have shown impressive growth since its debut in India. The company sold 45,226 units in 2019, which surged to 140,505 units in 2020, 181,583 units in 2021, and 254,556 units in 2022. Last year, Kia recorded annual sales of 255,000 units. In the first seven months of 2024 alone, Kia has sold nearly 150,000 units, indicating strong momentum leading into the festive season. The brand has also expanded its network, with 588 touchpoints across 256 cities in India.

India is a crucial export hub for Kia Corporation, with over 2.6 lakh units dispatched to more than 100 markets globally. Cumulatively, Kia India’s sales, including exports, have reached almost 1.3 million units.

Kia’s rapid ascent in the Indian market underscores its ability to meet diverse customer needs and drive innovation in the automotive industry. As the company prepares to introduce new models, it continues to be a major player in the dynamic Indian automotive landscape.
