Japan Airlines Boosts Fleet Modernization with Major Boeing 787 Dreamliner Deal

Japanese Flag Carrier Orders 10 Fuel-Efficient 787-9 Jets with Options for 10 More to Meet Rising International Travel Demand

FARNBOROUGH, United Kingdom — Japan Airlines (JAL) has taken a significant step in modernizing its fleet with a new agreement to acquire up to 20 additional Boeing 787 Dreamliners. This deal includes a firm order for 10 787-9 jets and options for 10 more, underscoring the carrier’s commitment to enhancing its long-haul capabilities and meeting growing international travel demand.

“We are delighted to announce the addition of 787 Dreamliners to our fleet. This order underscores our commitment to accelerating the introduction of the modern and more fuel-efficient aircraft to deliver unparalleled service to our customers and further reduce CO₂ emissions. We greatly appreciate the strong relationship and support from Boeing, which has been instrumental in our efforts to modernize our fleet and expand our international routes,” stated Yukio Nakagawa, JAL Executive Officer of Procurement.

Upon finalizing this order, JAL will enhance its current fleet of over 50 Boeing 787s and further solidify its future lineup with the inclusion of 21 Boeing 737 MAX jets. The new 787-9 Dreamliners, renowned for their market-leading efficiency and extended range of up to 7,565 nautical miles (14,010 km), will enable JAL to launch new routes and increase flexibility within its existing network.

In recent years, Japan Airlines has utilized the versatility of the 787 to establish new point-to-point markets, connecting Tokyo with cities such as San Diego, Boston, and Bangalore. This strategic expansion highlights the airline’s ability to leverage the 787’s capabilities to meet rising passenger demand and enhance global connectivity.

Brad McMullen, Boeing’s Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing, praised the continued partnership with JAL, stating, “Japan Airlines continues to be a global ambassador for the 787 Dreamliner. This latest agreement is a testament to the versatility and efficiency of the 787-9 for the airline’s key long-haul routes. We value our long-standing partnership with Japan Airlines and are pleased that they have re-selected the 787 Dreamliner as they continue to modernize their world-class fleet.”

Since its introduction in 2011, the 787 Dreamliner family has revolutionized air travel, opening more than 400 new nonstop routes worldwide and securing over 1,900 orders from 87 customers. With more than half of these orders coming from repeat customers like Japan Airlines, the Dreamliner continues to set the standard for efficiency and passenger comfort in the long-haul market.
