In a momentous occasion tinged with the spirit of patriotism and innovation, the Shoft Shipyard in Bharuch, Gujarat, witnessed the launch of the formidable 25T Bollard Pull tug, Baljeet (Yard 306), on March 10th, 2024. The ceremony, spearheaded by Commodore Rajat Nagar, WPS (Mbi), marked a significant milestone in India’s maritime capabilities and its steadfast journey towards self-reliance under the “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives.
Commissioned by the Government of India, Baljeet is the first of three powerful tugs contracted to Shoft Shipyard Pvt Ltd (SSPL), a micro, small, and medium-sized enterprise (MSME) that has proudly taken up the mantle to contribute to India’s defense and maritime infrastructure. Built to adhere to the stringent standards of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), Baljeet is not just a vessel but a beacon of India’s growing prowess in shipbuilding and naval support.
The introduction of Baljeet and its sister tugs into the Indian Navy’s fleet is set to significantly enhance the navy’s operational capabilities. These tugs are designed to provide critical assistance to naval ships and submarines during their most vulnerable moments – berthing, un-berthing, and maneuvering in tight spaces. Furthermore, Baljeet is equipped with state-of-the-art firefighting systems and is capable of performing limited search and rescue operations, ensuring safety and security in India’s waters.
This launch is more than just a celebration of a new addition to the Indian Navy; it’s a testament to India’s commitment to bolstering its maritime strength while promoting indigenous manufacturing and self-sufficiency. As Baljeet sets sail, it carries with it the hopes and dreams of a nation eager to navigate the waters of progress and self-reliance.
