Daimler India Outlines ₹4,000 Crore Investment for BharatBenz, 400 Jobs Planned

Chennai: Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) has outlined an additional investment of approximately ₹4,000 crore in Tamil Nadu, aimed at strengthening BharatBenz manufacturing, product development, research and development, infrastructure and future technology capabilities while creating around 400 jobs.

DICV, the maker of BharatBenz trucks and buses and a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler Truck AG, announced the proposed investment as part of a non-binding facilitation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Tamil Nadu at the Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave.

If implemented as proposed, the investment would take DICV’s cumulative investment in India to more than ₹14,500 crore.

The company said the fresh capital would support the next phase of BharatBenz’s growth in India, including improvements in manufacturing capacity, localisation, R&D and readiness for future technologies.

BharatBenz, which entered the Indian market in 2012, now has more than 220,000 trucks and buses operating in the country. Its vehicles are used across freight transportation, logistics, construction, mining and passenger mobility.

Focus on manufacturing and product development

The proposed investment comes as India continues to expand highways, industrial corridors, ports, mining operations, logistics networks and public mobility infrastructure — developments that directly influence demand for medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles.

DICV said the investment would help BharatBenz respond to these requirements with stronger product development, manufacturing capabilities, localisation and service support.

BharatBenz trucks serve applications ranging from long-haul freight and regional distribution to construction, mining, tractor-trailer operations and specialised transportation.

Its bus portfolio caters to school, staff and intercity transportation, with the company focusing on factors including safety, reliability, uptime, driver comfort and operating efficiency.

Commercial vehicles rarely receive the glamour attached to passenger cars, but they do much of the economy’s heavy lifting — quite literally — making manufacturing capacity and vehicle uptime important considerations for transport operators.

DICV’s Chennai manufacturing base

DICV operates a 400-acre integrated manufacturing and R&D facility at Oragadam near Chennai. The facility is supported by more than 4,000 employees and over 400 local suppliers.

According to the company, approximately 92% of the product value of BharatBenz vehicles is localised through its Indian supplier ecosystem.

BharatBenz also operates a nationwide network of more than 420 dealer and service touchpoints across major freight corridors, industrial clusters and regional markets.

DICV recently opened a Parts Logistics Centre in Pune, intended to improve parts availability, support dealers and reduce vehicle downtime for customers.

India also serves Daimler Truck’s global operations

While BharatBenz remains DICV’s principal brand in India, the company’s local operations also function as a manufacturing, sourcing and engineering base for Daimler Truck’s international business.

DICV said it has exported more than 75,000 trucks and buses and over 330 million parts to more than 70 markets.

The Chennai operations also supply transmissions to Daimler Truck plants in Germany, giving the Indian business a broader role within the group’s global manufacturing and supply network.

Commenting on the announcement, Torsten Schmidt, Managing Director & CEO, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles, said, “BharatBenz was built for India, and this investment reflects our confidence in the next phase of the country’s commercial vehicle growth. As infrastructure, logistics, mining, construction and passenger mobility continue to expand, Indian customers need trucks and buses that deliver higher uptime, safety, reliability and operating efficiency. Through BharatBenz, we are strengthening products, localization, service readiness and parts availability for India, while also reinforcing the country’s role as an important manufacturing and supply base within Daimler Truck’s global network.”

The proposed ₹4,000 crore investment underlines the growing importance of India not only as a commercial vehicle market but also as a manufacturing and engineering base for global vehicle makers. For DICV, the next phase will depend on converting the proposed investment into stronger products, deeper localisation and service capabilities that can keep pace with India’s rapidly expanding transport and infrastructure requirements.
