Tesla has opened test drives for the newly launched 2026 Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive at its experience centres across India, while also introducing Grok, the artificial intelligence assistant developed by xAI, for Model Y owners through an over-the-air software update.
The new Model Y variant is priced at ₹50,89,000 in India. Tesla said buyers can purchase it with a down payment of ₹6,00,000, while monthly instalments start at ₹39,990, subject to applicable financing terms.
Customers can order the vehicle through Tesla’s official website. Those placing an order before August 30, 2026, will receive a complimentary Wall Connector, according to the company.
Tesla said it will provide home-charging support across all Indian states, an important part of its efforts to make electric-vehicle ownership more convenient beyond cities with established public charging networks.
Up to 500 km WLTP range
The 2026 Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive offers a claimed driving range of up to 500 km under the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure, or WLTP.
Powered by what Tesla describes as ultra-responsive electric motors, the vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds.
The five-seat electric sport utility vehicle offers up to 2,138 litres of storage space. It also comes with power-folding rear seats, allowing owners to rearrange the cabin for passengers or luggage — depending on whether the weekend plan involves people, suitcases or both.
Tesla said the latest model benefits from its existing suite of artificial intelligence-driven vehicle technologies. The company also referred to the Model Y L as part of its broader Model Y technology portfolio.
Grok AI arrives in Indian languages
Grok is being made available to Tesla Model Y owners in India at no additional cost through an over-the-air update.
Owners can activate the assistant by saying “Hey Grok” or by long-pressing the voice-control button on the steering wheel.
The assistant supports several Indian languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada.
According to Tesla, Grok can help drivers plan journeys involving multiple stops entirely through voice commands. Users can add, change or cancel destinations while travelling without having to manually operate the touchscreen.
The system can also search for nearby Superchargers, restaurants, coffee shops, hospitals, automated teller machines, rest stops and other public facilities.
Tesla said Grok can explain warnings or alerts appearing on the vehicle’s touchscreen and suggest possible next steps. However, such explanations are intended as references and should not replace professional inspection where a vehicle issue requires technical attention.
Owners can customise the assistant’s language, conversational tone and interaction style. Tesla said the feature could also be used for activities such as language learning and storytelling during family journeys.
Navigation adapts to routines
The Summer 2026 software release also expands Tesla’s automatic navigation system.
Instead of suggesting routes only to frequently used locations such as home or work, the system can recommend other destinations based on a driver’s habits and schedule.
Tesla said the feature is intended to reduce the number of manual navigation inputs required during everyday journeys.
The company delivered more than 300 new or updated vehicle features globally through software updates in 2025. Such updates allow Tesla to add functions and performance improvements without requiring customers to visit a service centre — sparing owners an appointment, a waiting room and, occasionally, a complicated coffee machine.
Tesla increases AI computing capacity
Tesla said it more than doubled its onsite artificial intelligence computing capacity in Texas during the first half of 2026, measured in megawatts of computing infrastructure.
Its Cortex 2 computing facility is supporting the development of autonomous-driving software for vehicles as well as software for humanoid robots. The company plans to increase the facility’s capacity further during the remainder of 2026.
The investment reflects Tesla’s broader attempt to position artificial intelligence and software as central parts of its vehicles rather than as supplementary features.
Company reports record deliveries in several markets
Tesla also reported record deliveries in South Korea, Australia, Colombia, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Portugal, the Philippines, Chile, Slovenia and Lithuania.
To support demand, the company said it is increasing production of its 4680-format battery cells, which are used to support higher vehicle output.
Tesla described the Model Y as the world’s best-selling vehicle and said it expects the model’s global growth to continue. The company did not provide country-specific delivery figures or an India sales forecast in the announcement.
The arrival of a more accessible Model Y variant, combined with regional-language AI functions and home-charging assistance, underlines Tesla’s effort to adapt its software-focused ownership model to India. Its longer-term impact, however, will depend not only on conversational assistants and rapid updates, but also on pricing, charging access and the everyday reliability expected by Indian electric-vehicle buyers.
