BMW X5 Enters Fifth Generation With Five Powertrain Choices and Neue Klasse Technology

BMW has revealed the fifth-generation X5, giving its long-running Sports Activity Vehicle a major technological and design overhaul, including five different drive system options for the first time and several innovations borrowed from the company’s Neue Klasse programme.

The new BMW X5 will be offered with petrol and diesel engines featuring 48V mild-hybrid technology, plug-in hybrid variants, the first all-electric BMW iX5, and, at a later stage, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen. The hydrogen-powered version is set to become BMW’s first series-production hydrogen vehicle.

The move makes the X5 the first BMW model to be offered with five different drive system types, a notable expansion for a vehicle that helped establish the premium SUV segment when it was introduced in 1999. In BMW vocabulary, it remains a Sports Activity Vehicle — because apparently “SUV” was too modest for Munich.

The all-electric BMW iX5 will debut BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology. In the BMW iX5 60 xDrive, the system enables a claimed range of up to 845 kilometres, fast charging, 800V technology and practical bidirectional charging. The battery uses new cylindrical cells with a height of 120 millimetres, being introduced in the iX5 for the first time.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen, meanwhile, will use a third-generation fuel cell system, in-car hydrogen storage with BMW Hydrogen Flat Storage technology and an innovative high-voltage battery. BMW says the hydrogen model will offer a range of up to 750 kilometres.

“With its imposing presence and flawless symbiosis of comfort and driving pleasure, the BMW X5 became a global bestseller,” says Dr. Joachim Post, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Development. “And now the latest generation also benefits from the technologies in the Neue Klasse and the widest possible range of drive systems. As a result, I’m sure the new BMW X5 will set the benchmark in its class once again and write the next chapter in its success story.”

Visually, the new X5 adopts a more upright and monolithic design, combining traditional X5 proportions with elements from BMW’s Neue Klasse design language. The front end features vertically aligned BMW kidney Iconic Glow lighting and new “double-X” light icons, making their first appearance on a BMW.

The side profile has also been redesigned, with new recessed door handles called BMW Winglets. These open the electrically powered doors with a light touch, adding a futuristic flourish to a vehicle that already appears determined to make door handles a conversation topic.

BMW will offer the new X5 with 11 exterior paint colours and a wheel range extending up to 23 inches. The BMW X5 M60e xDrive will serve as the sporting flagship, while the M Sport package and M Sport package Pro will add more distinctive styling elements.

The company will also offer M Performance Parts for the new X5. These include an M Performance carbon-fibre front splitter, black high-gloss roof spoiler, aramid rear diffuser, aramid exterior mirror caps, 21- and 23-inch summer and winter complete wheels, and M Performance floor mats.

Inside, the new BMW X5 gets a redesigned cabin with a cleaner layout, new decorative surfaces and a strong focus on digital interaction. BMW says it is the first carmaker worldwide to offer slate as an optional decorative surface, alongside other materials such as glass.

The cabin incorporates BMW Panoramic iDrive, powered by BMW Operating System X. Key features include a free-cut Central Display, BMW 3D Head-Up Display, optional BMW Passenger Screen, BMW Panoramic Vision across the full width of the windscreen and a new multifunction steering wheel.

An ambient light strip runs from door to door, creating a wrap-around lighting effect intended to enhance the cabin atmosphere. The overall approach blends luxury, technology and the kind of calm minimalism that suggests even the dashboard has started doing meditation.

BMW says the new X5 continues to focus on driving dynamics and comfort. Adaptive suspension is standard, while the model also gets axle-load distribution close to 50:50. Optional systems include Adaptive Chassis Control and Adaptive Chassis Control Professional with roll stabilisation, initially available for all-electric and plug-in hybrid versions.

The new X5 also features BMW Symbiotic Drive, which provides intelligent support based on individual driving behaviour. Advanced Level 2 driver assistance and active safety systems are designed to allow smooth interaction between human driving and assisted functions.

In the BMW iX5 models, and later in the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, the Heart of Joy control system will enable BMW Soft-Stop, described by the company as the smoothest stopping action it has offered.

Production of the fifth-generation BMW X5 will begin at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the United States in August 2026. The first variants are scheduled for market launch in late November 2026, while the all-electric and plug-in hybrid versions will follow in early 2027.

Plant Spartanburg has produced the X5 since the model’s original launch in 1999. The new BMW iX5 will become the first all-electric vehicle to be manufactured at the facility. BMW has also built a new factory for sixth-generation high-voltage batteries next to the Spartanburg plant, which the company says requires no fossil fuels for normal operations.

For BMW, the new X5 is more than a model change. It is a technology bridge between combustion engines, electrification and hydrogen, arriving at a time when premium carmakers are trying to keep every door open — including, in this case, electrically powered ones.
