Mustang Reigns as America’s Favorite Sports Car for Over a Decade, Leads Globally

NEW YORK, March 27, 2024 – The Ford Mustang, an emblem of American automotive culture, continues to dominate the sports car segment, securing its status as America’s best-selling sports car based on 2023 U.S. registrations. This iconic vehicle has also achieved the distinction of being the best-selling sports car globally for over ten years, according to recent data.

In 2023 alone, Ford delivered more than 59,000 Mustangs to customers, adding to the nearly one million pony cars that have found homes over the past decade. This surge in sales coincides with the introduction of the all-new seventh-generation Mustang in North America, a launch that precedes its availability in China, Europe, Australia, and South America in 2024.

Jeff Marentic, General Manager, North America/Global Truck, Family, and Enthusiast Vehicles, highlighted the Mustang’s enduring appeal: “We’ve sold more Mustangs in our history than the population of major cities like Chicago, London, or Seoul. As Mustang approaches its 60th anniversary, we continue to celebrate the passion and excitement that the seventh-generation Mustang brings to customers across 85 markets globally.”

To commemorate the Mustang’s 60th anniversary, Ford is introducing a special Vermillion Red and Ebony Black logo at the New York Auto Show this week. The design is inspired by the original Mustang badge and wheel center caps from its 1964 World’s Fair debut. An exclusive feature tied to this anniversary will also be available to seventh-generation Mustang owners through an Automatic Software Update via their vehicle’s Sync 4 touchscreen in April.

The seventh-generation Mustang promises the perfect blend of aesthetics, performance, and sound. Available in both convertible and coupe forms, with options ranging from V8 engines to turbocharged 4-cylinders, and manual or automatic transmissions, it caters to a wide array of preferences and budgets. Additionally, the Mustang’s presence on racing circuits worldwide, including the Dark Horse R, Mustang GT3, and Mustang GT4, underscores its versatility and global appeal.

Ford’s ability to maintain the Mustang’s legendary status while adapting to evolving market demands and preferences underlines the brand’s commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction. As it races into its seventh decade, the Mustang continues to embody the spirit of American muscle, combining tradition with forward-thinking design and technology.
