DICV Puts Truckers in the Driver’s Seat of Healthcare with New Clinic in Tamil Nadu

Because even India’s toughest highway heroes deserve a pit stop that isn’t just chai and diesel.

Sangagiri, Tamil Nadu:
Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) has taken a meaningful detour from torque curves and horsepower charts to focus on something equally critical — the health of India’s truck drivers. In a thoughtful move, the company has inaugurated a dedicated Physiotherapy and Primary Healthcare Clinic in Sangagiri, one of Tamil Nadu’s busiest trucking hubs, in collaboration with Smile Foundation.

The initiative aims to benefit around 13,500 individuals, with over 70% of them coming from the trucking community — the very people who keep India’s logistics engine humming day and night (often quite literally).

From Highways to Healthways

Truck drivers are often hailed as the backbone of India’s economy, but their own health has long been parked in the slow lane. Long hours, irregular schedules, and physically demanding conditions mean that issues like back pain, fatigue, and lifestyle-related illnesses are all too common — and frequently ignored until they become serious.

Recognising this gap, DICV’s new clinic is designed to bring healthcare closer to drivers, rather than expecting drivers to chase it down between deliveries.

What’s on Offer?

This isn’t your average “quick check-up” setup. The clinic comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of services, including:

  • Physiotherapy sessions (because clutch legs need love too)
  • Outpatient consultations
  • Eye check-ups (essential for those long night drives)
  • Preventive health screenings
  • Referral support for advanced treatments

By focusing on both immediate care and long-term wellness, the initiative aims to reduce healthcare costs while improving overall quality of life for drivers and their families.

A Safer Road Begins with a Healthier Driver

Michael Moebius, President & Chief Procurement & Supply Chain Officer at DICV, summed it up aptly: while trucks may power the economy, it’s the drivers who truly keep the nation moving. Healthier drivers, after all, are more alert, resilient, and less prone to accidents — a win-win for both road safety and logistics efficiency.

Echoing this sentiment, Santanu Mishra, Co-founder of Smile Foundation, highlighted the long-overlooked healthcare needs of truckers and emphasized the importance of accessible, preventive care.

More Than Just a Clinic

Operating six days a week, the facility will be staffed by qualified doctors, physiotherapists, optometrists, and community mobilisers. It will also leverage a digital patient management system — ensuring efficient service, proper monitoring, and continuity of care (yes, even healthcare is getting its tech upgrade).

Beyond clinical services, the program will also focus on awareness campaigns and community outreach, aiming to build a culture where preventive healthcare isn’t an afterthought but a priority.

The Bigger Picture

In a country where logistics drives economic momentum, initiatives like this quietly remind us that behind every delivery truck is a human story — often overlooked, but deeply impactful.

And if this initiative succeeds, India’s highways might just become a little safer, a little healthier, and perhaps — just perhaps — a place where drivers don’t have to ignore that nagging back pain anymore.

Because sometimes, the most important upgrades aren’t under the hood — they’re behind the wheel.
