If minimalism had a gym membership and a black belt in safety, it would probably look like the Volvo EC40.
Launched globally in 2019 (back then you knew it as the C40), what you’re looking at today is the 2025 first-generation facelift of Volvo’s all-electric Swedish crossover SUV. It has evolved, matured, and quietly become that sophisticated friend who doesn’t talk much—but when he does, it’s usually 408 horsepower worth of authority.
In India, the EC40 comes in a single fully loaded variant: E80 Ultra, priced at ₹59 lakh (ex-showroom). If you prefer a traditional SUV shape over this coupe roofline drama, Volvo offers the EX40 at ₹50 lakh. Same DNA. Different hairstyle.

Designed in Sweden, Sculpted by Katharina Sachs
The EC40 has been designed by Katharina Sachs, and you can tell this car wasn’t sketched in a noisy studio. It’s restrained. Elegant. Confident.
The coupe-style sloping roofline gives it that sporty crossover identity, while the body-coloured closed grille reminds you—this one runs on electrons, not ego.
Up front, you get Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer Pixel LED headlamps—each housing 84 pixel LEDs. It’s not just lighting; it’s Scandinavian laser precision. Add cornering fog lamps, rain-sensing wipers, and power retractable auto-dimming mirrors with integrated cameras and indicators, and you realise—this isn’t flashy luxury, this is intelligent luxury.
The Onyx Black shade you see here makes it look like it just walked out of a Stockholm fashion week after-party. But if black feels too mysterious, you can choose from white, blue, green, beige, silver, and grey.

Under the Skin: Global DNA
The EC40 is built on Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform.
This isn’t some experimental EV-only skateboard. It’s the same architecture underpinning the C40, Polestar 2, Lynk & Co 01/02/03, Geely Boyue, Xingrui, and Xingyue. That means solid engineering roots and proven global validation.
Assembly happens across India, Belgium, China, and Malaysia—a truly international Swede.

Dimensions & Presence
At 4.4 metres long, 1.9 metres wide, and 1.6 metres tall, the EC40 sits perfectly in the small luxury SUV space.
- 171 mm ground clearance
- 11-metre turning circle
- 75 kg roof load capacity
- 2,200 kg kerb weight
- 2,620 kg gross weight
- Can tow up to 1,800 kg
Weight distribution is 40% front and 60% rear—giving it that planted rear-biased feel.
The 19-inch 5-spoke Black Diamond-Cut alloys are wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Vol Elect tyres (235/50 R19 front, 255/45 R19 rear). Wider at the back. Because yes, it knows how to launch.
Performance: Silence with a Supercar Accent
Under the floor sits a 78 kWh lithium-ion battery weighing around 500 kg.
Paired with dual permanent magnet synchronous motors, this Twin Motor AWD setup produces:
- 408 horsepower
- 660 Nm torque
- 0–100 km/h in 4.7 seconds
- Top speed: 180 km/h
- Range: 530 km
This is the part where the quiet Volvo suddenly embarrasses loud SUVs at traffic lights.
Charging?
- 11 kW AC: 0–100% in about 8 hours
- 175 kW DC: 10–70% in 27 minutes
You also get an 11 kW wall box charger free with the car. Very Swedish of them.
Safety: Volvo Being Volvo
Let’s be honest. Buying a Volvo without talking about safety is like reviewing biryani without mentioning rice.
The EC40 has scored 5 stars from Euro NCAP and Australian NCAP, and the highest “Good” rating from IIHS.
It comes with:
- 7 airbags
- Battery safety cage
- Double locking system
- 3–4 times stronger tempered side & rear glass
- Whiplash injury protection
- Side impact protection
- ISOFIX mounts
- BLIS (Blind Spot Information System)
- Cross Traffic Alert
- Lane Keeping Assist
- Pilot Assist with adaptive cruise
- Oncoming Lane Mitigation
- Front, rear & side collision mitigation
- 360-degree camera
- Hill descent & hill start assist
Pilot Assist is particularly impressive—it maintains distance, keeps you centered in the lane, and can even slow the car automatically if you don’t react.
Basically, Volvo assumes humans make mistakes. And builds cars that forgive them.
Interior: Sustainable Luxury
Open the door and you enter a world that smells less like leather and more like responsibility.
You get Suede textile/Microtech upholstery in beige (black and blue optional), recycled carpets, and a beautifully lit 3D topography backlit décor panel.
There’s a fixed panoramic glass roof with dark laminated tint—because Swedes love sunlight but respect UV rays.
Front seats are power adjustable Comfort seats with manual cushion extensions and 4-way power lumbar support. The driver gets memory function. Rear headrests can be folded electrically via infotainment.
Boot space is 404 litres, expandable to 1,205 litres with seats folded. There’s also a 31-litre frunk for your charging cables. And yes, a temporary spare wheel is included—because India.
Technology: Google Lives Here
The 9-inch Android-based infotainment system supports:
- Wireless Apple CarPlay
- Android Auto
- Google Assistant
- Google Maps
- Google Play Store
- Volvo Cars App integration
- Voice control
The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster offers Calm and Navigation modes.
There’s no start-stop button. Just press the brake, shift to Drive, and go. Park it—and it switches off automatically. It’s like the car understands you don’t want to press unnecessary buttons in 2025.
Wireless charging? Of course.
Two-zone climate control with CleanZone air purifier and PM2.5 sensor? Naturally.
Afterrun parking climate? It ventilates the cabin for 15 minutes even after you park.
There’s even a ticket holder. Because Scandinavian practicality never sleeps.
Audio: Concert Hall on Wheels
The 13-speaker 600W Harman Kardon system with air-ventilated subwoofer uses Dirac Unison Tuning software.
Every speaker is optimised individually. Result? Crisp highs, deep bass, and vocals so clear you might cancel your Spotify subscription and just sit in the parking lot.
Ownership & Warranty
Volvo offers:
- 3-year vehicle warranty
- 3-year service package
- 3-year roadside assistance
- 8-year / 1.6 lakh km battery warranty
You also get the Tre Kronor Experience program—luxury curated experiences and personalized events. Because buying a Volvo is apparently also joining a Scandinavian club.
Around 24,000 units are sold globally each year—respectable numbers for a niche coupe electric SUV.
The Verdict
The Volvo EC40 is not trying to be the loudest SUV in the room. It doesn’t have fake exhaust notes. It doesn’t scream aggression.
Instead, it delivers:
- Supercar-level acceleration
- World-class safety
- Sustainable luxury
- Intelligent technology
- Scandinavian restraint
At ₹59 lakh, it sits in a competitive luxury EV space—but if safety, design integrity, and silent performance matter to you, the EC40 makes a compelling case.
And yes, there’s a Black Edition internationally. When will it come to India? Volvo, if you’re listening—we’re ready.
Until then, the EC40 remains what it always wanted to be:
Quiet. Fast. Safe. And unapologetically Swedish.
