Munich, Pune (India) – In a landmark partnership aimed at shaping the future of automotive technology, BMW Group has teamed up with Tata Technologies to establish a Joint Venture (JV) focusing on the development of automotive software and business IT solutions. This JV marks a significant step towards the advancement of software-defined vehicle (SDV) solutions and digital transformation initiatives within BMW Group’s operations.
Set to kick off with an initial team of 100 employees, the venture is poised for rapid expansion, aiming to reach a workforce in the thousands in the upcoming years. This strategic collaboration will see the establishment of a software and IT development hub across three key Indian cities: Pune, Bangalore, and Chennai. While Pune and Bangalore will spearhead development and operations activities, Chennai will concentrate on delivering business IT solutions.
Subject to regulatory approvals, this JV embodies the principle of ‘Engineer in India for the World’, utilizing Tata Technologies’ digital engineering prowess and India’s vast talent pool to bolster BMW Group’s global software and IT capabilities. The focus areas include strategic software development for SDVs, automated driving, infotainment, digital services, and the digitalization and automation of product development, production, and sales processes.
Christoph Grote, Senior Vice President of Software and E/E Architecture at BMW Group, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, highlighting the opportunity to leverage India’s rich talent base to accelerate BMW Group’s software development for SDVs. He emphasized the benefit for Indian software engineers to work on leading-edge technologies in areas such as automated driving and AI.
Alexander Buresch, BMW Group’s CIO, underscored the success of expanding international DevOps hubs and welcomed the addition of Tata Technologies as a strong technology partner to enhance BMW Group’s IT footprint in India.
Warren Harris, CEO and MD of Tata Technologies, and Nachiket Paranjpe, President of Automotive Sales, both expressed their eagerness to contribute to BMW Group’s vision of engineering superior automotive experiences and advancing its digital transformation journey.
