Tata Motors PV Sales Cross 2 Lakh Units in Q2 FY27 as EV Demand Surges 90%

Mumbai: Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. reported its highest-ever quarterly sales in Q2 FY27, with 201,723 units sold across domestic and international markets, marking a 40% increase from 144,397 units in the same quarter a year earlier.

The company said demand remained strong despite Q2 traditionally being a seasonally softer period, with electric vehicles and CNG models emerging as major contributors to growth.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles also crossed the 70,000-unit monthly sales milestone in September, ending the quarter on a record note ahead of the festive season.

Shailesh Chandra, MD and CEO, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. said:

“In Q2 FY27, passenger vehicle demand sustained the strong momentum seen following GST 2.0, despite the quarter being seasonally softer. Industry Vahan volumes grew around 24% year-on-year, led by increasing adoption of greener powertrains, providing a promising backdrop for the forthcoming festive season.

For Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Q2 FY27 was our highest-ever quarter, with sales of 201,723 units and industry-beating growth of 40% year-on-year. We ended the quarter on a strong note, crossing the 70,000-unit sales milestone in September and look forward to carrying this momentum as we enter the festive period.

Our greener powertrain portfolio continued to be a significant growth driver. EVs recorded their highest-ever quarterly sales of over 47,000 units, growing 90% year-on-year, with EV penetration in our portfolio rising sharply to 23%, compared with around 8% for the industry. CNG also delivered its highest-ever quarterly sales and accounted for 28% of our volumes. Together, EV and CNG now contribute 51% of our sales, reflecting the rapid shift in customer preference towards greener mobility.

Customer response remained strong across our portfolio, with Punch emerging as India’s highest-selling SUV during the quarter. Building on the momentum of our Q1 launches, we further strengthened our portfolio with Curvv SeriesX, Sierra Legend Series and the all-new Tata Aeris. We also unveiled our new customer-facing identity, Tata.Cars, reflecting the evolution of our brand in step with the aspirations of today’s Indian car buyer.

Looking ahead, we remain optimistic about the festive season, supported by a strong order book and healthy customer traction across the portfolio. As we progressively scale up production, our focus will be on fully leveraging this demand, sustaining our growth momentum and further strengthening our competitive position in the market.”

EV and CNG models account for more than half of sales

Electric vehicles delivered their strongest quarterly performance yet, with Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles reporting sales of more than 47,000 EVs during Q2 FY27. That represented year-on-year growth of 90%.

EVs accounted for 23% of the company’s passenger vehicle volumes during the quarter, compared with around 8% for the broader industry, according to the company.

CNG vehicles also recorded their highest-ever quarterly sales and contributed 28% of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles’ total volumes.

Combined, EV and CNG models accounted for 51% of the company’s sales during the quarter — an indication of how quickly alternative powertrains are moving from the margins towards the centre of the Indian passenger vehicle market.

For an industry once dominated almost entirely by petrol and diesel, the arithmetic is beginning to look rather different.

Punch leads SUV sales; Tata expands portfolio

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles said the Punch emerged as India’s highest-selling SUV during the quarter, while demand remained strong across its wider model range.

The automaker also expanded its portfolio following launches made during the first quarter, adding the Curvv SeriesX, Sierra Legend Series and the all-new Tata Aeris.

Alongside the product activity, Tata Motors introduced its new customer-facing identity, Tata.Cars, which the company said reflects the evolution of its passenger vehicle brand and changing expectations among Indian buyers.

Festive season becomes next key test

The company said it enters the festive period with a strong order book and healthy customer traction, while production is being progressively increased to meet demand.

The performance comes against a broader rise in passenger vehicle registrations, with industry Vahan volumes growing around 24% year-on-year during the quarter, according to Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles.

With quarterly volumes crossing the two-lakh mark and alternative-fuel vehicles now contributing more than half of its sales, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles enters the festive season with considerably more momentum than a year ago. The next test will be whether that record pace can be sustained as manufacturers compete for one of the most important buying periods in the Indian automotive calendar.
