Uno Minda Charges Ahead with Second EV Powertrain Plant, ₹550 Crore Maharashtra Bet

India’s electric vehicle race is heating up faster than a dashboard left in the May sun, and Uno Minda clearly doesn’t want to be caught in the slow lane. The Gurugram-based automotive technology giant has announced plans to set up its second dedicated four-wheeler EV powertrain manufacturing plant in Maharashtra, strengthening its ambitions in the fast-evolving electric mobility ecosystem.

The company’s Board of Directors has approved a new greenfield manufacturing facility at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad), Maharashtra, through its subsidiary Uno Minda Auto Innovations Private Limited (UMAIPL). The facility will focus on high-voltage electric powertrain systems for passenger vehicles, a segment rapidly becoming the heart and soul of India’s next-generation automotive industry.

With an estimated investment of ₹550 crore, the project will be funded through a mix of debt and equity. The capital expenditure will be spread over the next two years, while commercial operations are expected to begin by Q2 FY28.

At the new plant, Uno Minda will manufacture and assemble advanced Electric Drive Units (EDUs) and Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) systems. These technologies are increasingly becoming crucial for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), and even the growing category of Range Extended EVs (REEVs). In simple terms, this plant is being built to power the cars of tomorrow — quietly, efficiently, and without asking drivers to stop at petrol pumps every few days.

The announcement comes close on the heels of Uno Minda’s first EV powertrain facility at Khed City, Pune, which is currently under development and expected to commence operations in the second half of FY27. Two plants in quick succession signal one thing very clearly: Uno Minda is not treating EVs as a “future opportunity” anymore. For them, the future has already arrived — and apparently, it needs more factory space.

The company says the latest expansion is backed by fresh business wins from a key anchor customer, although the customer’s identity remains undisclosed. Industry watchers believe this indicates growing confidence among automakers in local sourcing of advanced EV technologies, an area that India has traditionally depended on imports for.

Speaking on the announcement, Ravi Mehra, Managing Director, Uno Minda Limited, said the Indian automotive sector is witnessing a structural transition toward sustainable mobility and that Uno Minda aims to remain ahead of the curve.

He added that the new facility will not only increase production capacity but also expand the company’s technological capabilities in Electric Drive Units and Dedicated Hybrid Transmission systems. He reiterated Uno Minda’s commitment toward localization of high-voltage powertrain technologies, ensuring global-standard innovation is developed and manufactured within India.

The move aligns with the broader shift in India’s automotive market, where manufacturers are aggressively investing in electrification, hybrid technologies, and localized supply chains. As global and domestic automakers accelerate EV launches, component makers like Uno Minda are positioning themselves as critical enablers of the transition.

And while most people still debate whether EVs are the future, Uno Minda seems to have already reserved land, approved investments, and started building it.
