Off-Road Electrifies: Ford’s F-150 Lightning Strikes New Terrain with ‘Switchgear’ Powerhouse

Ford Performance Motorsports Global Director Mark Rushbrook has announced the electrifying off-road debut of the F-150 Lightning Switchgear, Ford’s latest demonstrator vehicle. This high-performance machine, riding on mighty 37-inch tires, is set to redefine the electric truck experience, blending the best of both on-road agility and off-road prowess.

Born from a collaboration with RTR Vehicles, the Switchgear is a souped-up sibling to the F-150 RTR Ultimate Fun-Haver of 2016. This electric beast boasts a custom carbon bodywork, draped in Ford Performance’s striking 2024 livery. Its robust design isn’t just for show; it’s packed with off-road upgrades to push the F-150 Lightning into uncharted territories.

Joining the ranks of Ford’s innovative electric demonstrators like the SuperVan 4.0 and 4.2, the Mustang Mach-E 1400, Mustang CobraJet 1400, and the F-100 Eluminator, the Switchgear is more than just a vehicle. It’s a testament to the electrifying potential of EVs, serving as a real-world lab for engineers to fast-track future electric vehicle innovations.

The Switchgear’s enhancements aren’t just skin-deep. Its widened track and elevated ground clearance are engineered for stability and maneuverability in the most challenging terrains. Its suspension is a marvel, featuring FOX 3-inch internal bypass shock absorbers and uniquely designed front and rear bumpers, optimized for extreme approach and departure angles.

The truck doesn’t just rely on its suspension for its off-road chops. It sports a custom double-wishbone suspension setup at the front and a multilink independent arrangement at the rear. With coil-over shocks, a stabilizer bar, and bespoke control arms, the Switchgear is built to conquer any challenge.

Ford didn’t stop at the mechanics. The Switchgear is armored with carbon composite front fenders, bed sides, and a rear bumper cover. Its steel-fabricated rock rails and front skid plate are a testament to its readiness for rugged adventures. The truck even features limit straps to optimize suspension and wheel travel.

Rolling on NITTO Ridge Grappler 37×12.5R18 tires, the Switchgear is more than just an off-road warrior; it’s a statement on wheels, complete with a unique chase rack housing two spare wheels.

This electric powerhouse will make its public debut at the King of the Hammers off-road race in Johnson Valley, California, starting January 25. The F-150 Lightning Switchgear isn’t just a truck; it’s a trailblazing titan ready to electrify the off-road world.
