Honda Names Its First Made-in-India Electric SUV ‘Alpha’, Confirms December 2 Global Unveiling

New Delhi: Honda Cars India Ltd. (HCIL) has officially announced Honda Alpha as the name of its upcoming all-electric SUV, confirming that the company’s first Made-in-India electric SUV will make its global debut on December 2, 2026. The announcement marks a significant step in Honda’s electrification plans, with India set to become the global production base for the new model.

The Honda Alpha will also become the first Honda vehicle in India to feature the company’s redesigned H mark, signalling a broader transformation in the Japanese automaker’s global automobile business.

India Takes Centre Stage in Honda’s Electric Vehicle Strategy

India will be the first market to introduce the Honda Alpha, positioning the country as an important destination for Honda’s next generation of electric vehicles.

The electric SUV was first showcased as a concept prototype at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, offering an early glimpse of Honda’s approach to electric mobility, futuristic design and driving performance.

According to the company, the production model is being developed to combine advanced technology with innovative styling and the driving characteristics traditionally associated with Honda vehicles.

The SUV has also been conceived to complement both urban and natural environments, reflecting the growing demand for vehicles that can accommodate different lifestyles and driving conditions.

Although Honda has confirmed the model’s global unveiling date, detailed technical specifications, battery capacity, driving range, pricing and market launch schedule have not been disclosed in the announcement.

Honda Alpha: A Name Symbolising a New Beginning

The name Alpha originates from the first letter of the Greek alphabet, representing a new beginning. Honda says the designation reflects its intention to introduce a fresh chapter in electric mobility for customers.

Speaking about the announcement, Toshiyuki Yanagisawa, President & CEO, Honda Cars India, said:

“We are delighted to announce Honda Alpha as the official name of our upcoming electric SUV. Honda Alpha represents our ambition to bring advanced electric mobility to our customers in India while delivering the quality, reliability and joy of driving that Honda is known for.”

He further added:

“With India serving as the global production base for this model in future, it is an important step in Honda’s electrification journey and reflects our strong commitment to the Indian market. We look forward to ushering in a new chapter for Honda in India with this exciting new offering,”

The decision to establish India as the global production base for the Alpha is particularly noteworthy, reflecting Honda’s intention to give its Indian operations a larger role beyond serving the domestic passenger vehicle market.

Honda Introduces Its Redesigned H Mark in India

Alongside the electric SUV announcement, Honda has introduced its redesigned H mark in official communication from Honda Cars India for the first time.

The familiar H emblem has represented Honda automobiles since 1963, undergoing several design revisions during its six-decade history.

The latest redesign reflects Honda’s ambition to transform its automobile business while continuing to pursue technological advancement and new challenges.

The Honda Alpha will become the first Honda model in India to carry the updated emblem, making the upcoming electric SUV both a new product introduction and a visual representation of the company’s changing direction.

For a manufacturer whose H badge has remained instantly recognisable across generations, the updated identity represents a meaningful change. The letter stays, but the ambitions behind it are evolving.

December 2 Debut to Reveal Honda’s Electric SUV Plans

With its global unveiling scheduled for December 2, 2026, the Honda Alpha will provide a clearer picture of the company’s strategy for India’s electric passenger vehicle market.

Its development follows Honda’s broader efforts to expand electrification and respond to changing consumer expectations regarding technology, mobility and environmental considerations.

The decision to introduce the model first in India also highlights the country’s growing significance in Honda’s international manufacturing and product strategy.

For Honda, the Alpha represents more than the arrival of another SUV. It signals a new phase in which India is expected to play a central role in the development of the company’s electric vehicle business. The December unveiling will be an important opportunity to assess how that ambition translates into a production-ready vehicle—and how Honda intends to compete in an increasingly crowded electric SUV market.
