Mahindra XUV 3XO ZNG Earns 5-Star Bharat NCAP Rating With 29.36 Points in Adult Protection

Mumbai: Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. has announced that its XUV 3XO ZNG has secured a five-star safety rating under the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP), becoming India’s first sub-compact CNG SUV to achieve the distinction. The result marks a significant development for CNG-powered vehicles in a segment where affordability, fuel efficiency and practicality often dominate purchasing decisions.

The XUV 3XO ZNG recorded 29.36 out of 32 points in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and 45 out of 49 points in Child Occupant Protection (COP), demonstrating strong performance across both assessment categories.

The achievement follows the five-star Bharat NCAP rating awarded to the regular Mahindra XUV 3XO in November 2024, extending the model’s crash-safety credentials to its CNG-powered derivative.

Six Airbags, ESC and Dedicated CNG Safety Systems

Mahindra says the XUV 3XO ZNG comes equipped with more than 35 standard safety features, including six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and ISOFIX child-seat mounting points.

Beyond conventional occupant protection, the SUV incorporates safety provisions specifically designed for its compressed natural gas system.

Among these is an integrated gas-leak detection system that automatically switches the vehicle from CNG to petrol operation when a gas leak is detected. The feature adds a layer of protection to the dual-fuel powertrain.

The combination of passive safety equipment, electronic stability assistance and dedicated fuel-system safeguards reflects the increasing emphasis on comprehensive safety engineering in India’s CNG passenger vehicle market.

Mahindra Highlights Safety-First Engineering

Commenting on the achievement, Dr Velusamy R, President, Automotive Business, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said:

“At Mahindra, safety is a fundamental commitment that guides every stage of vehicle development. The XUV 3XO ZNG was engineered to excel across every aspect of the ownership experience, delivering ‘zero compromise’ in space, technology, performance and driving experience. Its robust architecture is engineered to provide high levels of occupant protection and peace of mind on every journey. The 5-star Bharat NCAP rating is a testament to our engineering excellence and reinforces the XUV 3XO ZNG’s position as an SUV that excels across every dimension.”

82 kW Power, 200 Nm Torque and 24.7 km/kg Efficiency

Launched in October 2026, the Mahindra XUV 3XO ZNG combines its safety credentials with a dual-fuel powertrain designed to deliver comparable performance in both operating modes.

According to Mahindra, the SUV produces 82 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque in both CNG and petrol modes, while delivering a certified CNG fuel efficiency of 24.7 km/kg.

The company has also addressed one of the more familiar compromises associated with CNG vehicles: luggage space.

Instead of relying on a conventional cylinder arrangement that occupies a substantial portion of the boot, the XUV 3XO ZNG uses an underfloor twin-cylinder configuration.

This packaging allows the vehicle to retain a flat loading floor and 270 litres of usable boot space, helping preserve everyday practicality despite the additional fuel-storage hardware.

For buyers accustomed to choosing between luggage capacity and lower running costs, that is one less compromise to calculate.

A Significant Step for CNG Vehicle Safety in India

The five-star Bharat NCAP result gives the Mahindra XUV 3XO ZNG a notable distinction in India’s competitive sub-compact SUV segment.

While CNG vehicles have traditionally attracted attention for their potential to reduce fuel expenses, the XUV 3XO ZNG’s assessment places crash protection more prominently in the conversation.

The result also demonstrates how manufacturers are integrating alternative-fuel systems into existing vehicle architectures while retaining occupant protection and practical cabin packaging.

As India’s passenger vehicle market continues to offer buyers a wider choice of powertrains, the XUV 3XO ZNG’s five-star rating highlights an increasingly important expectation: fuel efficiency and affordability should not have to come at the expense of safety.
