BMW M2 xDrive Turbo Edition Coming to India With 480 HP and Exclusive Heritage-Inspired Design

Gurugram: BMW India has opened pre-orders for the first-ever BMW M2 xDrive Turbo Edition, a limited-production performance coupe inspired by the iconic 1973 BMW 2002 turbo. Featuring distinctive motorsport-inspired styling, carbon-fibre components and a 480 hp turbocharged six-cylinder engine, the special edition will be available through authorised BMW dealerships across India on a first-come, first-served basis.

BMW has not disclosed the exact number of units allocated to India or the pricing of the special edition. However, the company has confirmed that availability will be strictly limited, making it one of the more exclusive versions of the M2 offered in the country.

A Modern Tribute to the 1973 BMW 2002 Turbo

The BMW M2 xDrive Turbo Edition draws its design inspiration from the original BMW 2002 turbo, a model that helped establish the German manufacturer’s reputation for turbocharged performance.

Finished exclusively in Alpine White, the special edition features hand-painted BMW Motorsport stripes, recalling the distinctive appearance of its 1970s predecessor.

Among its most recognisable design elements is the reversed ‘turbo’ script on the bonnet, accompanied by a black power dome and a bespoke ‘turbo’ emblem positioned beneath the M2 badge.

Prominent M stripes stretch across the bonnet, reinforcing the visual connection with BMW’s motorsport heritage.

The exterior package also includes a carbon-fibre roof, carbon-fibre tailgate and carbon-fibre rear spoiler.

Customers can additionally specify optional 19-inch front and 20-inch rear Gold Bronze M Performance forged wheels.

The result is a contemporary performance coupe with a distinctly retro personality. After all, some design statements are apparently too good to remain in the 1970s.

Carbon-Fibre Interior and Exclusive Turbo Detailing

The heritage-inspired treatment continues inside the BMW M2 xDrive Turbo Edition, where the focus remains on performance-oriented materials and exclusive detailing.

The cabin features M Carbon bucket seats designed to provide additional support during spirited driving, alongside an M Alcantara steering wheel and carbon-fibre interior trim.

An exclusive ‘turbo’ badge integrated into the centre cupholder cover provides another reference to the original BMW 2002 turbo.

Rather than introducing an entirely new cabin layout, BMW has concentrated on distinctive materials, trim and design elements that differentiate the special edition from the standard M2.

480 HP Six-Cylinder Engine, 0–100 km/h in 3.7 Seconds

Beneath its heritage-inspired exterior, the BMW M2 xDrive Turbo Edition retains the performance credentials expected from a modern BMW M model.

Power comes from a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder petrol engine producing 353 kW (480 hp).

According to BMW, the special edition accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds.

The electronically limited top speed is 250 km/h, increasing to 285 km/h when equipped with the optional M Driver’s Package.

These figures place the limited-edition coupe firmly in modern high-performance territory, demonstrating just how far turbocharged technology has advanced since the original model appeared more than five decades ago.

The BMW 2002 Turbo: A Pioneer Born During the Oil Crisis

The inspiration for the new special edition dates back to 1973, when BMW introduced the 2002 turbo during a period of considerable uncertainty for the global automotive industry.

The world was confronting an oil crisis, making the arrival of a turbocharged performance car a particularly bold move.

Powered by a turbocharged engine developing 170 hp, the original BMW 2002 turbo was capable of exceeding 200 km/h.

More importantly, it became a pioneering example of turbocharging technology in series-production passenger cars, helping establish a foundation for the widespread adoption of forced induction in modern automobiles.

Its combination of relatively compact dimensions, lightweight construction and strong performance made it an influential model in BMW’s history.

The original car also became recognisable for its distinctive motorsport graphics and reversed ‘turbo’ lettering, design features now revisited in the M2 xDrive Turbo Edition.

Limited Availability in India

BMW India has confirmed that the M2 xDrive Turbo Edition can be pre-ordered through its authorised dealership network.

With production numbers described as strictly limited and allocations offered on a first-come, first-served basis, availability will depend on the number of vehicles assigned to the Indian market.

Pricing, the precise allocation for India and delivery timelines have not been specified in the announcement.

The BMW M2 xDrive Turbo Edition represents more than a cosmetic tribute to a historic performance car. It highlights the evolution of turbocharged engineering from the experimental performance machines of the 1970s to today’s increasingly sophisticated sports coupes. By combining the visual identity of the 1973 BMW 2002 turbo with modern M engineering, BMW is drawing on its past while demonstrating how much the technology has changed.
