Hyundai Opens Mobility Innovation Ideathon Across Seven Indian Universities, Final Set for December 16

NEW DELHI: Hyundai Motor Group has launched a Mobility Innovation Ideathon for students across seven leading Indian universities, offering approximately ₹10 lakh in total prize money as it expands collaboration between academia and the automotive industry in future mobility research.

The competition, organised under the Hyundai Centre of Excellence (Hyundai CoE), will invite students to develop ideas aimed at improving in-vehicle experiences for Indian customers. Hyundai has also announced a parallel Research Synergy Forum that will bring university faculty members together with company researchers to discuss batteries, electrification and future mobility technologies.

The Hyundai CoE network currently comprises IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad, Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) Nagpur and Tezpur University.

Established in 2025, Hyundai CoE serves as Hyundai Motor Group’s collaborative research platform with academic institutions in India, with a focus on India-specific mobility research, talent development and technology collaboration.

Ideathon to Focus on In-Vehicle Experience

The Mobility Innovation Ideathon will run from September through early December 2026 under the theme “Enhanced In-Vehicle Experience.”

Students from participating universities will be invited to develop concepts addressing Indian mobility requirements and changing customer lifestyles, particularly as artificial intelligence, software-defined vehicles, digital interfaces and personalised mobility services become increasingly important to the automotive industry.

“The Mobility Innovation Ideathon will be an important opportunity to discover creative ideas from students at leading universities in India and gain new insights into the Indian mobility market and customers,” said Bijaya Ketan Panigrahi, Professor of Electrical Engineering Department in IIT Delhi and Hyundai CoE Co-Chair.

The competition will accept proposals across four categories: India-Smart Interaction, AI-Powered & Digital In-Vehicle Experience, Next-Generation In-Vehicle Interface and Smart Value Innovation.

Students will submit their proposals through a dedicated microsite, after which each participating university will conduct an initial screening.

Preliminary winners from individual universities are scheduled to be announced on October 30, 2026.

Seven Teams to Reach Final Round

Teams selected during the preliminary stage will then face an offline semi-final evaluation conducted by Hyundai Motor Group judges.

Seven finalist teams are expected to advance to the final round on December 16, 2026, where they will present their ideas before a Hyundai Motor Group jury.

The company plans to distribute approximately ₹10 lakh in prize money across the seven finalist teams.

While innovation contests often produce futuristic ideas that look impressive on presentation screens, Hyundai’s stated objective goes a step further: identifying concepts that could eventually contribute to future mobility research and customer-focused vehicle experiences.

“We expect student driven ideas to contribute to future mobility research and enhanced customer experience. Going forward, we will continue to develop the Mobility Innovation Ideathon into an industry-academia collaboration channel that connects outstanding Indian talent with Hyundai Motor Group,” said Chang Yeon Cho, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor India Engineering.

Research Forum to Bring Professors and Hyundai Researchers Together

Alongside the student competition, Hyundai CoE will organise the Research Synergy Forum, aimed primarily at professors and researchers from its member institutions.

The forum will focus on sharing research findings and exploring possible collaborations in areas including battery technology, electrification and future mobility.

Hyundai said the programme is intended to increase exchanges among faculty members across participating universities while also identifying potential research opportunities with the group’s R&D divisions.

The two initiatives mark an expansion of the Hyundai CoE model beyond individual research projects into areas including student talent discovery, idea generation, academic networking and longer-term technology collaboration.

As automakers increasingly depend on software, artificial intelligence, electrification and digital user experiences alongside traditional mechanical engineering, partnerships between universities and industry are becoming a larger part of mobility research. Hyundai’s latest programmes place Indian students and researchers directly within that evolving technology conversation — with some of their ideas potentially travelling considerably further than the classroom.
