Mumbai: Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. is moving towards taking possession of the first approximately 800 acres required for its planned integrated automobile and tractor manufacturing facility at Additional Butibori in Nagpur, Maharashtra, marking another step forward in what is set to become the company’s largest such manufacturing complex in India.
The greenfield facility, announced earlier this year, is planned across 1,500 acres in the Vidarbha region. Mahindra also intends to establish a 150-acre supplier park in Sambhajinagar to support the new Nagpur operation and its existing manufacturing facilities at Chakan and Nashik.
Once fully operational, the Nagpur plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of more than 5 lakh vehicles and 1 lakh tractors. That scale would make it Mahindra’s largest integrated automobile and tractor manufacturing facility in the country.
The Sambhajinagar supplier park will manufacture and supply components not only to the upcoming Nagpur facility but also to Mahindra’s established plants in Chakan and Nashik, creating a broader manufacturing and supplier network across Maharashtra.
Beyond factory buildings and production lines, Mahindra is placing considerable emphasis on developing the workforce required to operate the new complex. The company said it is working on processes to identify, develop and train people capable of manufacturing automobiles and tractors across multiple powertrains and future technologies.
Mahindra also plans to draw on the experience of associates currently working across its existing manufacturing operations.
Over the next two to three years, skilled and experienced associates will have an opportunity to participate in a detailed selection process for roles at the Nagpur facility. The company said candidates will be assessed on technical capability, demonstrated behaviours, alignment with Mahindra’s values and their ability to collaborate effectively.
In other words, building one of the company’s biggest factories will require rather more than simply handing over the keys to 1,500 acres.
Mahindra is also planning to establish a dedicated skilling centre in Nagpur. The centre will focus on developing capabilities in areas including mechanical operations, welding and painting, among other manufacturing disciplines.
The emphasis on training is particularly significant as modern automobile factories increasingly need workers familiar not only with conventional manufacturing processes but also with different powertrain technologies and evolving production systems.
Mahindra has not yet disclosed the total workforce requirement for the facility or the number of jobs expected to be created. The company said further details on employment opportunities, workforce requirements and related processes will be announced as the project progresses.
The Nagpur development represents a substantial expansion of Mahindra’s manufacturing footprint in Maharashtra, combining vehicle and tractor production with a linked supplier ecosystem and workforce-development programme. As the company moves from land acquisition towards construction and staffing, the project’s impact will increasingly be measured not only by production capacity, but also by the industrial and employment opportunities it creates across the region.
