Hyderabad/Shimla: Olectra Greentech Limited said it has deployed its 4,000th electric bus in India, becoming the first company in the country to reach the milestone as Himachal Pradesh inducted 297 of its vehicles into the Himachal Road Transport Corporation fleet.
The milestone bus was symbolically handed over to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri during a flag-off ceremony for the new HRTC electric bus fleet.
Senior representatives of the Himachal Pradesh government, HRTC and Olectra Greentech attended the event.
According to the Hyderabad-based electric mobility company, its 4,000 buses are operating across several Indian states and cities, serving public transport networks and carrying millions of passengers.
Olectra said the combined fleet has travelled more than 730 million “green kilometres” and prevented over 6.5 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. The figures underline the expanding role of electric buses in reducing tailpipe emissions in cities where public transport vehicles spend much of the day on the road — and rarely enjoy the luxury of an empty commute.
The deployment also comes as state transport undertakings increasingly turn to electric buses to modernise their fleets, reduce fuel dependence and address urban air pollution. However, the long-term success of such programmes will also depend on charging infrastructure, maintenance capacity and dependable daily operations.

For Himachal Pradesh, the addition of 297 electric buses represents a substantial expansion of cleaner public transport in a state where challenging terrain can make fleet reliability and operating efficiency especially important.
The 4,000-bus milestone is significant not merely for the number of vehicles deployed, but for what it signals about the changing shape of Indian public transport. Electric buses are moving beyond pilot projects and into large-scale state fleets, where their real test will be measured not at flag-off ceremonies, but through years of reliable service on everyday routes.
