BYD Unveils 2nd-Gen Blade Battery with 5-Minute EV Charging, Plans 20,000 Flash Stations

BYD has once again decided that waiting around at charging stations is so last decade. The Chinese EV giant has unveiled its 2nd Generation Blade Battery along with a new Flash Charging technology, promising charging speeds so fast they could make traditional refuelling stations slightly nervous.

Charging an EV in Minutes? BYD Thinks So

At a global technology reveal in Shenzhen on March 6, 2026, BYD announced a breakthrough that could reshape electric mobility. The company claims its latest battery and charging ecosystem can take an EV from 10% to 70% charge in just 5 minutes, while 97% charge can be reached in about 9 minutes—numbers that begin to rival the time it takes to fill up a petrol tank and grab a coffee.

Even extreme winter conditions appear less intimidating. According to the company, charging from 20% to 97% at –30°C takes only three minutes longer than at room temperature, addressing one of the most frustrating realities of EV ownership in colder regions.

A Blade Gets Sharper

The second-generation Blade Battery builds on BYD’s already well-known battery architecture, pushing both performance and efficiency further.

After six years of intensive research, the new battery increases energy density by around 5% compared to the first-generation Blade Battery, while dramatically improving fast-charging capability. BYD says the technology eliminates the traditional engineering trade-off between high energy density and ultra-fast charging.

When paired with the latest lightweight vehicle platform—demonstrated on the Denza Z9GT—the battery enables a range of up to 1,036 km, positioning it among the longest-range EVs currently announced.

To manage the heat generated during rapid charging, engineers introduced two key systems: a “Lithium-Ion High-Speed Channel” and a Full-Spectrum Intelligent Thermal Management System, both designed to improve cooling efficiency and maintain battery safety. Staying true to its long-standing philosophy, BYD reiterated that “safety is the ultimate luxury of NEVs.”

Meet Flash Charging: 1500 kW of Pure Electricity

To unlock these extreme charging speeds, BYD also introduced Flash Charging, supported by a new ultra-powerful charger capable of 1,500 kW output per connector—one of the highest figures ever announced in the EV charging industry.

The system integrates high-capacity energy storage, allowing charging stations to deliver massive power without putting excessive strain on the local electrical grid. In simple terms, the charger stores energy and releases it quickly when vehicles plug in.

If conventional EV chargers feel like filling a water tank through a garden hose, BYD’s Flash charger is closer to opening a fire hydrant.

Charging Stations That Don’t Fight Back

Beyond raw power, BYD has also redesigned the user experience at charging stations. The Flash Charging station introduces a T-shaped pulley charger with a “Zero-Gravity” cable system, allowing users to move the connector easily around the vehicle while keeping cables suspended and clean.

Anyone who has wrestled with heavy charging cables on rainy nights might quietly applaud this engineering decision.

20,000 Flash Stations Coming

BYD is not stopping at the technology announcement. The company plans to construct 20,000 Flash Charging stations across China by the end of 2026, with global rollout planned soon after.

Importantly, these stations will be open to the public, not limited to BYD vehicles alone, aiming to accelerate the broader EV ecosystem.

A Vision Two Decades in the Making

The announcement also ties back to BYD’s long-term environmental strategy. Back in 2006, company chairman Wang Chuanfu introduced the concept of the “Three Green Dreams,” focusing on renewable energy, energy storage, and electrified transportation.

Nearly two decades later, that vision is evolving into a fully integrated Solar-Storage-Charging ecosystem, with Flash Charging representing the latest step in that journey.

The Bigger Picture

While the EV industry has made enormous progress, slow charging remains one of the biggest psychological barriers for consumers. Long queues at charging stations during holidays and dramatic performance drops in winter have often made skeptics question whether EVs are truly ready for universal adoption.

BYD’s latest breakthrough aims to answer that question with a simple message: EV charging should be as quick and convenient as refuelling a traditional car.

And if the company’s bold numbers hold up in the real world, the phrase “charging anxiety” might soon become as outdated as dial-up internet.
