NHAI Says ‘KYV’ Now Means ‘Keep Your Vehicle’ Simple: FASTag Users Get an Easier Ride!

New Delhi: In what could be described as the highway equivalent of switching from manual to automatic, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has simplified the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for FASTag users. The move, driven by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), aims to ease compliance stress and improve the overall tolling experience—so that users can focus on the road, not on re-uploading photos of their bumpers.

Under the revised KYV guidelines, NHAI has finally done what every driver secretly wished for: cut down unnecessary photo ops. Users will now need to upload only one photo — the front of the car showing the number plate and FASTag. Gone are the days of turning your driveway into a makeshift photo studio for side-angle shots of your car.

To make things even smoother, the system will now automatically fetch Registration Certificate (RC) details from Vahan, once the user enters their vehicle number, chassis number, or mobile number. If you’ve got multiple cars tied to one number, you can simply select which one you’re working on — no more ‘FASTag confusion’ at home debates.

FASTags issued before the new KYV policy will continue to remain active, unless they’re involved in complaints like misuse or, let’s say, an overenthusiastic friend borrowing your tag. Issuer banks will also send friendly SMS reminders (and maybe a digital nudge) to help you complete KYV at your convenience.

In case a user struggles with the online upload, banks have been instructed to proactively assist customers before any disconnection — marking a rare and heartwarming case of customer service actually calling you first. And if things still go awry, the National Highway Helpline 1033 is your go-to pit stop for assistance.

The move is part of NHAI’s broader effort to make highway journeys as seamless as the tarmac on a freshly inaugurated expressway. With this, FASTag users can drive easy — fewer clicks, fewer pictures, and a whole lot more peace of mind.
