In a groundbreaking move for American motorsport, the Cadillac Formula 1 Team has received formal approval to join the FIA Formula One World Championship grid starting in 2026. Backed by TWG Motorsports and General Motors, the Cadillac entry will become the 11th team on the prestigious F1 circuit.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem heralded the announcement as a “transformative moment” for the sport.
“Today marks a transformative moment, and I am proud to lead the Federation in this progressive step for the championship,” said Ben Sulayem. “The Cadillac Formula 1 Team’s presence in the paddock will inspire future competitors and fans. Their entry strengthens our mission to push motorsport’s boundaries at the highest level.”
With TWG Motorsports bringing elite engineering capabilities and GM infusing decades of performance expertise, the partnership aims to deliver a strong American presence on the F1 grid.
“For the past year, we have worked hand in hand with GM to lay a robust foundation for an extraordinary Formula 1 entry,” said Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Motorsports. “Now, with 2026 in our sights, we’re accelerating our efforts — expanding our facilities, refining cutting-edge technologies, and continuing to assemble top-tier talent.”
GM President Mark Reuss echoed the excitement: “We’re thrilled the Cadillac Formula 1 Team is official. We’re incredibly grateful for the support from the FIA and Formula One Management leadership for us and for our collaboration with TWG. The excitement only grows as we get closer to showcasing GM’s engineering expertise on the prestigious global stage of F1.”
The team will be led by experienced motorsports executive Graeme Lowdon as Team Principal, with veteran Russ O’Blenes heading TWG GM Performance Power Units LLC — a new venture dedicated to developing Cadillac’s V6 turbo-hybrid power unit for the 2026 season.
“This announcement is the next step in getting on the grid and continues our efforts towards building a full-works team,” Lowdon stated. “Through the long and thorough application process, we have never lost pace in our planning or our belief in the mission. We can’t wait to go racing and give fans a new team to cheer for.”
Since its bid began in January 2023, TWG Motorsports has assembled over 300 specialists across aerodynamic design, chassis development, and vehicle dynamics. With operations in Indianapolis, Indiana; Charlotte, North Carolina; Warren, Michigan; and Silverstone, England, the team is poised to bring a new era of American engineering to the F1 circuit in 2026.
