JSW MG Motor India Pioneers Industrial Energy Storage with India’s First Second-Life EV Battery Pilot

Groundbreaking UPS Powered by Repurposed EV Batteries Deployed in Pune

Greater Noida: In a significant stride towards sustainable energy solutions, JSW MG Motor India has unveiled its third pilot project under “Project Revive,” showcasing India’s first high-voltage second-life battery equipped with a homegrown Battery Management System (BMS). Developed in partnership with Vision Mechatronics, this innovative energy storage system, which utilizes repurposed electric vehicle (EV) batteries, is now powering an industrial facility in Pune as a backup uninterruptible power supply (UPS) solution.

This announcement, made at The Battery Show 2024 in Greater Noida, marks a major milestone for JSW MG Motor India as it continues to push the boundaries of EV battery repurposing. With the goal of promoting a circular economy, the company is leading efforts to harness the potential of second-life EV batteries, reducing waste and extending their usefulness beyond the lifespan of vehicles.

A Sustainable Vision for the Future

As part of “Project Revive,” this new pilot showcases a collaborative approach to sustainability, with Vision Mechatronics playing a crucial role in the product’s development. The high-voltage battery system is designed with an indigenous BMS tailored for stationary industrial applications, offering both flexibility and enhanced performance. It also features advanced monitoring systems that ensure optimal battery efficiency and proactive safety measures, including protections against thermal runaway.

Gaurav Gupta, Chief Growth Officer at JSW MG Motor India, expressed enthusiasm about the project: “Our partnership with Vision Mechatronics highlights our dedication to the circularity of EV batteries. The launch of India’s first high-voltage second-life battery with an indigenous BMS shows our commitment to future-ready solutions. We’re proud to be at the forefront of building a sustainable EV ecosystem, and this pilot represents another key step toward a greener, more resilient energy landscape.”

Innovation Driving Circular Economy

Vision Mechatronics’ Managing Director, Dr. Rashi Gupta, also emphasized the transformative potential of the project. “We are proud to introduce ReLive, a pioneering battery solution that repurposes EV batteries for industrial use. This first-of-its-kind system is not only a safer, more efficient alternative but also a significant contributor to reducing carbon footprints. ReLive embodies our shared vision of sustainable energy innovation,” she said.

By repurposing used EV batteries for industrial energy storage, JSW MG Motor India and Vision Mechatronics are demonstrating how these batteries can have a second life in a variety of applications, offering a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to traditional energy storage technologies.

Past and Future of Project Revive

This latest initiative is part of JSW MG Motor India’s broader push towards sustainable energy, following previous pilot projects under “Project Revive.” Earlier in 2024, the company partnered with BATX and IIT Delhi to develop an off-grid EV charging station and deployed a 5kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to power a school in Nainital. These efforts underscore the company’s commitment to leading India’s energy transformation by creating innovative, environmentally conscious mobility solutions.

As JSW MG Motor India continues to explore new ways to repurpose EV batteries, it is setting a new standard for sustainability within the automotive and energy sectors. With this third pilot project, the company is not only advancing the future of clean energy but also offering a practical solution to the growing demand for sustainable industrial energy storage.

A Greener Tomorrow

JSW MG Motor India’s success with Project Revive is a testament to the power of innovation in tackling global energy challenges. By promoting the reuse of EV batteries, the company is paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future—one where waste is minimized, and energy efficiency is maximized across industries.
