Mercedes-Benz and Starbucks Collaborate to Revolutionize EV Charging Across America

In a groundbreaking partnership aimed at transforming the electric vehicle (EV) charging landscape, Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging and Starbucks have announced an initiative to expand the availability of high-power EV charging stations across the United States. This collaboration will integrate state-of-the-art DC Fast chargers into over 100 Starbucks locations, providing a seamless and enjoyable experience for EV drivers.

Charging Meets Coffee Culture: A New Standard in Convenience

The first phase of this ambitious project will see the installation of high-power 400 kW chargers along the 1,400-mile stretch of Interstate 5 (I-5), a crucial travel corridor that runs from Canada to Mexico. This move will not only make long-distance travel more accessible for EV drivers but also embed the charging process into everyday life. While their vehicles charge, customers can relax and enjoy their favorite Starbucks beverages, making the often tedious task of recharging an integral part of their routine.

Leaders in Sustainability Unite

Andrew Cornelia, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging, highlighted the vision behind the partnership: “The collaboration between two leading brands like Mercedes-Benz and Starbucks will uplift the charging experience for all EV drivers. Together, we seek to infuse delight into this facet of EV ownership through intentional experiences that make drivers genuinely excited to plug in. We envision a future where charging your vehicle is as easy as enjoying your favorite Starbucks.”

Echoing this sentiment, Michael Kobori, Chief Sustainability Officer at Starbucks, remarked, “At Starbucks, we have a long history of bringing renewable and clean energy projects to connect communities that lack the infrastructure. Partnering with Mercedes is the next step in expanding our EV charging offerings so our customers can refuel sustainably while they enjoy Starbucks.”

A Commitment to Carbon Neutrality

Both Mercedes-Benz and Starbucks are committed to sustainability and reducing carbon footprints. Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging supports Mercedes-Benz Group AG’s goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2039, powered entirely by clean energy. This initiative forms part of the broader “Ambition 2039” strategy, aiming for a fully electric vehicle lineup and a carbon-neutral value chain.

Starbucks, on the other hand, aims to cut its carbon emissions by 50% by 2030. The company has already established over 1,000 stores in the U.S. with access to EV charging and continues to expand its network through strategic partnerships like the one with Mercedes-Benz. This collaboration will further extend renewable energy and clean technology to more communities, enhancing the customer experience with sustainability at its core.

Expanding the Charging Network

Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging launched its first site in November 2023, as part of an initial $1 billion investment to create a premium EV charging network. Since then, the network has rapidly grown, opening multiple 400 kW charging stations across Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky. The network is poised to cover nearly half of the U.S. states within the next 12-18 months.

With this expansion, Mercedes-Benz aims to set a new standard in the quality and accessibility of EV charging. By aligning with top-tier brands like Starbucks, they seek to address gaps in the current charging infrastructure, rethink spatial design, and offer unparalleled consumer experiences.

Looking Ahead

This collaboration marks a significant step forward in the evolution of EV charging in America. By combining the strengths of Mercedes-Benz’s cutting-edge technology with Starbucks’ extensive retail presence and commitment to sustainability, this initiative promises to make EV charging a more integrated and enjoyable part of daily life. As the network expands, it will bring the convenience and reliability of high-power charging to more communities, supporting the transition to a more sustainable future.
