Hyundai Opens Advanced Pune Manufacturing Plant, Targets 1.14 Million Annual Production Capacity by 2030

Pune: Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has formally inaugurated its new manufacturing facility in Talegaon, Pune, marking a major expansion of the South Korean automaker’s operations in India. The company plans to invest up to ₹11,000 crore in phases at the facility, which currently has an annual installed production capacity of 1.7 lakh vehicles and is scheduled to expand to 3.2 lakh units by 2030.

The plant was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the presence of senior government officials and Hyundai Motor Group executives, including Lee Seong-ho, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to India; Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar; Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung; Hyundai Motor Group Vice Chair Jaehoon Chang; Hyundai Motor Company President and CEO José Muñoz; and HMIL Managing Director and CEO Tarun Garg.

The inauguration coincides with Hyundai’s 30th anniversary in India and two significant commercial milestones: cumulative domestic sales approaching 10 million passenger vehicles and exports reaching 4 million vehicles since 1999.

According to Hyundai, it is the first automobile manufacturer to achieve cumulative passenger vehicle exports of 4 million units from India, further strengthening the country’s position in its global manufacturing network.

New Hyundai Venue to Be Manufactured Exclusively at Pune Plant

One of the facility’s immediate responsibilities is manufacturing the all-new Hyundai Venue, which will be produced exclusively at the Pune plant.

The company intends to export the SUV to international markets, with plans to expand its export presence to more than 35 countries.

Beyond the Venue, the manufacturing facility has been designed with flexible production systems capable of accommodating multiple models, including internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and hybrid models in the future.

The approach gives Hyundai flexibility as automotive markets move towards different combinations of conventional and electrified powertrains.

The plant also features an engine manufacturing shop with an annual production capacity of 1.5 lakh engines to support vehicle assembly operations.

Hyundai Targets 1.14 Million Vehicles in Annual Capacity by 2030

Hyundai plans to increase the Pune facility’s annual installed production capacity from the existing 1.7 lakh units to 3.2 lakh vehicles through a phased expansion programme ending in 2030.

Combined with the company’s existing manufacturing operations in Chennai, Hyundai Motor India’s total annual production capacity is expected to reach approximately 1.14 million vehicles by 2030.

The expansion is intended to support growing domestic demand while providing additional manufacturing capacity for export markets.

Speaking at the inauguration, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said:

“The inauguration of Hyundai Motor India’s Pune plant and the company’s achievement of 4 million cumulative passenger vehicle exports reflect India’s growing strength as a global automotive manufacturing hub. Hyundai’s continued investments in advanced manufacturing technologies, innovation, localization and skill development will contribute significantly to economic growth, employment generation and development of a robust automotive ecosystem in Maharashtra. We welcome Hyundai’s long-term commitment to the state and the nation. The Government of Maharashtra shall extend our full support to Hyundai’s future growth journey.”

AI, Robotics and Industry 4.0 Technologies at the Heart of Production

Hyundai describes the Talegaon facility as one of its most technologically advanced manufacturing plants worldwide.

Developed around Industry 4.0 principles, the factory incorporates artificial intelligence, digital manufacturing systems, predictive maintenance technology and advanced quality inspection processes.

The facility uses Hyundai’s E-FOREST digital manufacturing platform to integrate production activities with data-driven monitoring and management.

Its technological capabilities include AI-based defect detection, automated quality inspection, digital simulations and predictive maintenance systems designed to identify potential equipment issues before they interrupt production.

AI-enabled workplace safety solutions have also been incorporated into the manufacturing environment.

For employees, the facility includes augmented reality-based training systems, allowing workers to familiarise themselves with manufacturing processes through immersive digital environments.

Hyundai says these technologies are intended to improve productivity, manufacturing consistency and operational safety.

The campus also includes a medical centre, employee wellness facilities and recreational infrastructure.

According to the company, the facility received a 2026 Red Dot Award for its people-centric workplace design.

Suppliers Invest Nearly ₹4,600 Crore in Maharashtra

The Pune plant is expected to play an important role in strengthening the regional automotive supply chain.

Hyundai said 55 Tier-1 supplier partners have already invested nearly ₹4,600 crore in Maharashtra to support the manufacturing ecosystem.

Nearly half of the company’s supplier sourcing network serving the facility is located within a 50-kilometre radius, an arrangement that could help reduce transportation distances and improve supply-chain coordination.

The broader supplier ecosystem, including Tier-1 and Tier-2 vendors, has generated more than 18,000 employment opportunities across the state, according to Hyundai.

Addressing the company’s investment plans, HMIL Managing Director and CEO Tarun Garg said:

“The inauguration of our Pune plant marks the beginning of HMIL’s next chapter of growth in India. We will invest INR 11,000 crore in phases at this facility.”

The investment and supplier-development programme reinforce Pune’s established importance within India’s automotive manufacturing industry.

India Remains a Strategic Market for Hyundai Motor Group

The opening also underlines Hyundai Motor Group’s broader plans for India, which extend beyond conventional vehicle production.

Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung said:

“India remains one of Hyundai’s most important and strategic markets globally. The inauguration of the Pune plant reflects our long-term commitment to India’s growth and our confidence in its bright future. HMIL’s milestone of 4 million cumulative vehicle exports demonstrates the global competitiveness of Indian manufacturing and highlights India’s growing role within Hyundai Motor Group’s worldwide operations.”

The company is expanding its research and development activities in India, particularly in battery technologies, vehicle electrification and future mobility systems.

Its industry-academia collaboration network currently spans seven institutions across the country, with nearly 40 research projects underway.

These initiatives are intended to support technical development and strengthen India’s capabilities in emerging automotive technologies.

Hyundai Highlights Community Development Initiatives in Maharashtra

Alongside its manufacturing investments, Hyundai Motor India has outlined several social development programmes being implemented through the Hyundai Motor India Foundation.

The company says its IONIQ Forest initiative has planted more than one million trees, with an estimated reduction of 63,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide over five years.

Its Sparsh Sanjeevani initiative has benefited more than 50,000 rural residents, while the Hope4Cancer programme has supported early detection and preventive healthcare for more than 2,000 individuals through 20 screening camps.

Project H₂OPE has provided safe drinking water access to more than 1.2 lakh schoolchildren.

Hyundai also reports that its skilling and welfare initiatives have supported over 1.5 lakh citizens and helped unlock nearly ₹300 crore in government welfare benefits across Maharashtra.

A New Manufacturing Chapter for Hyundai in India

Three decades after establishing its presence in India, Hyundai is entering another phase of expansion, with Pune becoming an important addition to its existing Chennai manufacturing operations.

The investment comes as automakers increasingly balance domestic market demand, export opportunities and the transition towards electrified vehicles.

For Hyundai, the Pune plant represents an opportunity to expand production capacity, increase localisation and strengthen its international supply network. For Maharashtra, the project brings additional industrial investment, supplier activity and employment opportunities.

The longer-term significance of the facility, however, will depend on how effectively Hyundai converts its manufacturing ambitions into sustained production, exports and jobs.

With its planned ₹11,000 crore investment, growing supplier ecosystem and production capacity targeted to reach 3.2 lakh vehicles annually, the Talegaon plant is set to become an important part of Hyundai’s next decade in India—and of the country’s ambitions as a global automotive manufacturing hub.
