Koenigsegg has unveiled the CCGT1, a road-legal, track-focused Megacar inspired by the Swedish manufacturer’s aborted CCGT GT1 racing programme. Based on the CC850, the new model produces up to 1,600 hp, develops as much as 800 kg of downforce at 250 km/h, and introduces the company’s first factory-authorized optional track package.
Production is limited to 70 cars, and Koenigsegg says every example had already been allocated before the CCGT1 made its public debut.
The new model follows the same retrospective philosophy as the CC850, which pays tribute to Koenigsegg’s first homologated production car, the CC8S. This time, however, the inspiration comes from a competition car that never actually got the opportunity to compete.
That makes the CCGT1 less a conventional anniversary special and more an attempt to finish a chapter that motorsport regulations closed rather abruptly nearly two decades ago.

Inspired by Koenigsegg’s Unfulfilled GT1 Project
Christian von Koenigsegg had endurance racing in mind from the earliest days of the company. According to Koenigsegg, he studied the Le Mans GT1 regulations while designing the original CC prototype and deliberately kept its width and frontal area within the limits required for the racing category.
Those basic proportions subsequently carried into the CC8S and CCR, eventually providing the foundation for a dedicated GT1 endurance racing project — the Koenigsegg CCGT.
Working with Koenigsegg engineer and fabricator Dag Bölenius, Christian von Koenigsegg developed the CCGT to weigh roughly 1,000 kg, comfortably below the GT1 class weight limit of 1,100 kg. The difference allowed ballast to be positioned strategically to improve the car’s balance.
Power came from a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre Koenigsegg V8 producing 600 hp in race specification, the maximum allowed under the regulations. It drove the rear wheels through a magnesium sequential gearbox, while the aerodynamic package generated more than 600 kg of downforce.
Test driver Loris Bicocchi helped develop the car, which Koenigsegg says demonstrated competitive pace from its earliest running.
Then the regulations changed.
Only about two months after Koenigsegg began shakedown testing, the FIA altered the GT1 rules to favour higher-volume production cars. With participation becoming increasingly expensive and manufacturers beginning to leave the category, the series eventually disappeared.
Koenigsegg cancelled the programme before the CCGT completed a single competitive racing lap.
Only one CCGT was built.
The car was later sold and remained with its first owner for 15 years before being offered for sale at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2024. Now owned by a US-based custodian, it has been fully refurbished by the Koenigsegg Legend Division and is being prepared to compete in the GT1 historic category against cars it was originally intended to race.
The timing provided Koenigsegg with the excuse — not that a company producing four-figure horsepower road cars generally needs much encouragement — to revisit the idea.
CCGT1 Turns the Racing Tribute Into a Road Car
The CCGT1 uses the Koenigsegg CC850 as its starting point but has been extensively redesigned for substantially greater circuit capability.
Christian von Koenigsegg described the project as both a celebration of the restored CCGT and a deliberate move towards a more track-focused production car.
“This is something truly special – our first creation that’s designed deliberately as a track-optimized circuit scalpel as well as an extraordinary daily driver. It has been so rewarding seeing the original CCGT come back to life over the last few years. This seems like an appropriate way to celebrate. I’m very excited to drive and explore its full capabilities, and I can’t wait for the wider Koenigsegg family to do the same. To also showcase our newly developed Ghost Fibre for the first time is truly exiting and builds on the history of the Trevita project, that was launched in the same era as the CCGT.”
At its heart is Koenigsegg’s twin-turbo V8, producing 1,280 hp on standard pump fuel and 1,600 hp when running on E85 biofuel.
Koenigsegg’s in-house engine management system allows the engine to operate on different blends of the two fuels.
Additional cooling has been incorporated to maintain performance during prolonged circuit use. A new roof scoop supplies air to an enlarged oil cooler as well as a dedicated cooling system for the dampers.
800 Kg of Downforce at 250 Km/h
Aerodynamics represents one of the biggest departures from the CC850.
Koenigsegg says nearly every body panel has been redesigned, with only the doors and removable roof carried over. Development concentrated on two areas: generating usable aerodynamic load and maintaining sufficient cooling during sustained high-speed running.
The most obvious addition is a large active rear wing inspired by the original CCGT.
It offers 30 degrees of automatic adjustment and switches between low-drag, high-downforce and air-brake configurations depending on the driving situation.
But Koenigsegg says the wing is only one part of the aerodynamic package.
A large front splitter and active underbody flaps have been introduced to balance rear downforce, while the sculpted underfloor uses strakes to create low-pressure vortices. A dedicated rear diffuser further manages airflow beneath the car.
Andreas Tjernberg Persson, who led the aerodynamic programme, said:
“Everything in aerodynamics is about balance.”
He added:
“The rear wing works beautifully and is both a visual and functional nod to the original CCGT, but it would be pointless on its own. We had to address the balance at the front of the car, too.”
The complete system generates up to 800 kg of downforce at 250 km/h.
According to Koenigsegg, the CCGT1 sits between the Jesko Attack and Sadair’s Spear in terms of peak downforce, but has deliberately been engineered to generate more accessible aerodynamic grip at comparatively lower speeds.
Persson explained:
“The rear wing is big, yes, but it actually has a tiny surface area compared with the floor. The floor is much bigger and therefore much more efficient at controlling and directing airflow.”
He added:
“The Jesko Attack was once our highest-downforce car. Then came Sadair’s Spear, which has 30% more downforce than the Attack. The CCGT1 sits between the two for peak downforce, but it has been specifically designed to provide accessible downforce at comparatively lower speeds, giving the driver an outstanding driving experience. That’s what good aero design can do.”
The system also reduces aerodynamic load at higher speeds to help manage tyre loads on straights.
A Sequential Shifter — With a Clutch Pedal
One of the CCGT1’s more unusual engineering features is its transmission interface.
The car retains Koenigsegg’s nine-speed Light Speed Transmission, or LST, but introduces a new Koenigsegg Sequential Shift system, known as KSS.
KSS uses a sequential lever positioned close to the steering wheel and incorporates a clutch pedal for moving away from a standstill. Once underway, ignition-cut technology allows fast clutchless gear changes, recreating the basic experience of the original CCGT’s racing transmission.
KSS is standard on every CCGT1.
Four operating settings are selected using a dial on the centre console marked ASMR — Auto, Sequential, Manual and Reverse.
It is an acronym unlikely to make the CCGT1 particularly relaxing, despite what the internet may associate those four letters with.
For owners who prefer a conventional manual interaction, Koenigsegg will also offer the Engage Shift System, or ESS, from the CC850.
The optional system combines a clutch pedal with a gated six-speed gear selector while electronically controlling six of the LST’s nine ratios. A nine-speed automatic driving mode remains available for everyday traffic.
Paddle shifting and automatic operation are available with both transmission configurations.
Christian von Koenigsegg said:
“The CCGT1 is a creation with two clear identities. On the road, it’s a sublime Megacar that’s both comfortable and incredibly capable. But its origins are rooted in endurance racing, and that’s where the CCGT1 reveals its full character as a true celebration of the original CCGT – with or without its roof!”
Cockpit Designed Around Track Driving
The interior reinforces the CCGT1’s competition theme while retaining the equipment expected of a road-going Koenigsegg.
Starting the car involves a covered ignition switch, a fuel-pump toggle and a red starter button for the twin-turbo V8.
Ahead of the driver is Koenigsegg’s third-generation Chronocluster, which incorporates the company’s analogue G-meter. The device operates entirely through G-force rather than an electrical connection.
Standard equipment includes lightweight carbon-fibre seats and a six-point harness for the driver.
Koenigsegg’s touchscreen infotainment system is retained, reflecting the company’s intention that the CCGT1 should remain usable away from a racing circuit rather than becoming a thinly disguised competition car wearing number plates.
Koenigsegg Introduces Its First Factory Track Package
Owners wanting considerably more commitment can specify what Koenigsegg calls its first factory-designed track package.
The package is designed to be installed or removed by a Koenigsegg Certified Dealer, allowing the same vehicle to alternate between road and circuit configurations.
Equipment includes a full carbon roll cage, HANS-compatible racing seats, six-point harnesses for both occupants, a fire-suppression system, race exhaust, integrated air jacks, track-specific suspension and brake settings, telemetry and data logging equipment, as well as a second set of wheels with track-focused tyres.
Enhanced aerodynamics are also included.
Koenigsegg says cars equipped with the package should become its fastest-lapping production models to date, helped not only by their tyres and aerodynamic performance but by the enhanced cooling systems designed to permit longer sessions without sacrificing performance.
Customers will also receive invitations to dedicated CCGT1 track events with factory support.
Christian von Koenigsegg said:
“The CCGT1 offers something compelling to the weekend racer who also wants a daily driver with genuine extended capability on track. That’s what our optional track package allows. Fit it for race day through your local Koenigsegg dealer, and the character changes completely – from an exceptional weekend tourer with respectable track credentials into a true circuit weapon.”
New Aircore Wheels and the Return of ‘White Carbon Fibre’
Koenigsegg has also developed optional three-spoke Aircore carbon-fibre wheels for the CCGT1, using a retro-inspired design intended to reference competition machinery of an earlier period.
The CCGT1 also introduces a material called Ghost Fibre, effectively revisiting an idea first explored with the company’s Trevita project in 2009.
Trevita introduced what Koenigsegg described as a white carbon-fibre finish, but the manufacturing process proved difficult enough that production was halted.
Ghost Fibre is a newly developed interpretation rather than simply a revival of the old process.
According to Koenigsegg, the material creates a crystal-white aramid and carbon matrix while providing additional ballistic protective properties, greater panel toughness and sound-deadening characteristics.
The company also says Ghost Fibre enables panels to be lighter than an equivalent construction using only conventional carbon fibre.
A 70-Car Homage to the Race That Never Happened
Koenigsegg has not positioned the CCGT1 merely as a visual recreation of a racing car. Its changes to cooling, aerodynamics, drivetrain controls and available safety equipment are intended to give the model substantially greater endurance on a circuit while preserving full road legality in standard configuration.
Christian von Koenigsegg summed up the distinction this way:
“The CCGT1 has two clear identities. On the road, it’s a sublime tourer that is both comfortable and incredibly capable. But its origins are rooted in endurance racing, and that’s where the CCGT1 reveals its full character as a true celebration of the original CCGT – with the roof panel on or off!”
The original CCGT never got the racing career for which it was created. Nearly two decades later, its restoration for historic competition has given Koenigsegg an opportunity to revisit that unfinished ambition from another direction.
The 70-example CCGT1, already fully allocated, therefore arrives as more than another ultra-powerful limited-edition Koenigsegg. It connects the company’s current technology with one of the most intriguing “what if?” stories from its early history — while finally giving the CCGT name something its predecessor was denied: a proper life on the racetrack.
