Mumbai: While rising diesel prices and higher operating costs continue to give fleet operators a few extra reasons to stare at their spreadsheets, Mahindra & Mahindra’s Trucks & Buses business managed to keep its wheels firmly pointed toward growth. The company reported total sales of 3,129 vehicles in May 2026, registering an impressive 18% year-on-year increase compared to 2,643 units sold in May 2025.
Mahindra’s commercial vehicle operations comprise the Mahindra Trucks & Buses Division (MTBD) and SML Mahindra Limited (SML). Together, the two businesses delivered a strong performance despite a challenging market environment marked by cost pressures and geopolitical uncertainties.
The biggest contributor to growth came from the passenger vehicle segment, which includes buses. Combined sales in this category surged 32% year-on-year to 1,976 units in May 2026, up from 1,495 units in the same month last year. Cargo vehicle sales remained largely stable at 1,153 units, posting a marginal growth of 0.4%.
For the year-to-date period ending May 2026, Mahindra’s Trucks & Buses business recorded cumulative sales of 6,140 vehicles, representing a healthy 15% increase over the 5,351 units sold during the corresponding period last year.
MTBD Delivers Strong Growth Across Segments
The Mahindra Trucks & Buses Division (MTBD) reported sales of 1,362 vehicles in May 2026, reflecting a robust 24% growth over the 1,100 units sold in May 2025.
Cargo vehicle sales at MTBD rose 10% to 809 units, while passenger vehicle sales jumped an impressive 52% to 553 units, highlighting strong demand in the bus segment.
On a year-to-date basis, MTBD sales stood at 2,632 units, up 15% compared to the same period last year. Passenger vehicle sales grew 23%, while cargo vehicle sales increased by 9%.
SML Mahindra Continues Positive Momentum
SML Mahindra Limited (SML) also posted encouraging numbers, with total sales reaching 1,767 units in May 2026, a 15% increase over the 1,543 units sold a year ago.
The company’s passenger vehicle business remained the star performer, growing 26% to 1,423 units. Cargo vehicle sales, however, declined 17% to 344 units, reflecting the softer demand environment in certain freight transport categories.
For the January-May 2026 period, SML’s cumulative sales climbed 15% to 3,508 units, driven largely by a 22% rise in passenger vehicle sales.
Industry Faces Near-Term Challenges
Commenting on the market outlook, Vinod Sahay, Executive Chairman – SML, President – Aerospace, Advanced Technologies, Trucks, Buses & CE, Mahindra & Mahindra, said the commercial vehicle industry continues to face short-term challenges due to elevated input costs, rising diesel prices and global geopolitical uncertainties, which are impacting fleet operator profitability.
He noted that while infrastructure spending and replacement demand remain strong long-term growth drivers, the industry is currently witnessing signs of moderation in the short to medium term. Mahindra therefore maintains a cautious outlook as macroeconomic uncertainties continue to influence market sentiment.
Despite those challenges, Mahindra’s May performance suggests that while the commercial vehicle industry may be navigating a few bumps on the highway, demand for buses and passenger transport solutions is still travelling comfortably in the fast lane. After all, when passenger vehicle sales jump by over 30%, it seems some parts of the market have decided not to wait at the next traffic signal.
