Toyota Picks Maharashtra for New SUV Plant, India Gets Another Giant Automotive Playground

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has announced plans to build a brand-new vehicle manufacturing plant in Maharashtra’s Bidkin Industrial Area, adding another major chapter to India’s fast-growing automotive story. The new facility is expected to begin production in the first half of 2029 and will have an annual production capacity of 100,000 vehicles. In simple words: Maharashtra is about to get a fresh dose of robotic welding sparks, paint-shop perfume, and SUV fever.

The upcoming plant will manufacture a brand-new SUV model and will feature key automotive production operations including stamping, welding, painting, and final assembly. Toyota also says the facility will directly employ around 2,800 people once production begins.

The announcement signals Toyota’s growing confidence in India not just as a large domestic market, but also as a strategic export and manufacturing hub for surrounding regions. While many people still associate Toyota in India with the Innova quietly ruling family road trips and Fortuner owners behaving like they own entire highways, the Japanese automaker is clearly preparing for a much larger future here.

Toyota says the new plant is part of its long-term strategy to strengthen global competitiveness while also contributing to local communities and India’s automotive ecosystem. The company emphasized that its journey in India has been shaped through strong partnerships and continuous learning from the market, and this expansion reflects Toyota’s intent to deepen its roots further.

The Bidkin Industrial Area has increasingly become an attractive destination for manufacturing investments thanks to improving infrastructure and connectivity. With this new facility, Toyota aims to create a production structure capable of responding flexibly to future market demand not only in India but also across neighboring regions.

Interestingly, Toyota has not yet revealed the name of the upcoming SUV that will roll out from the plant. But considering India’s unstoppable appetite for SUVs, one thing is certain — the company isn’t building this facility to produce boredom on wheels.

The investment also aligns with India’s larger push to become a global manufacturing powerhouse under initiatives focused on industrial growth and automotive expansion. For Maharashtra, this means more jobs, stronger supplier ecosystems, and another major global automaker strengthening its footprint in the state.

Toyota’s India story has steadily evolved over the years from a premium utility vehicle player into a broader mobility-focused brand. And with this fresh manufacturing announcement, the company appears ready to shift into an even higher gear for the next decade.

By 2029, Bidkin may very well become one of India’s newest SUV capitals — and judging by current market trends, there’s a good chance half the parking lot there will already be full before the first vehicle even rolls out.
