Digital earners, startup professionals, and Tier-2 ambitions are quietly reshaping India’s premium car landscape—one pre-owned luxury badge at a time.
India’s love affair with luxury cars is no longer reserved for seasoned business tycoons or late-career achievers. If anything, it’s getting younger, sharper, and a bit more digitally savvy. According to a recent survey by Autobest Emperio, nearly 60% of pre-owned luxury car buyers in India fall within the 35–40 age bracket, signalling a clear generational shift in how and when Indians step into premium mobility.
Conducted across major metros and rapidly evolving Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities such as Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Lucknow, Indore, and Ahmedabad, the survey gathered insights from over 3,000 participants. The results paint a picture of a market where ambition is accelerating faster than ever—sometimes even faster than the cars themselves.
Interestingly, the luxury car ownership journey is now beginning earlier than before. Around 40% of buyers are under the age of 35, with nearly 10% of those in their late 20s already viewing luxury cars as a key lifestyle milestone. In a country where “settling down” once meant buying a sensible sedan, today’s younger professionals are clearly aiming for something with a three-pointed star, a propeller badge, or four rings on the grille.
Affordability remains the biggest driving factor, with nearly 70% of respondents opting for pre-owned luxury vehicles over brand-new ones. With entry points starting around ₹25 lakh, aspirational buyers are gaining access to premium brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi—cars that might otherwise remain parked firmly in the dream garage.
Unsurprisingly, luxury SUVs continue to dominate buyer preferences, reflecting India’s ongoing obsession with high-riding, road-commanding machines. Because if you’re going to arrive in style, you might as well have a commanding view of traffic while doing it.
Geographically, Delhi-NCR continues to lead the charge, accounting for nearly 40–50% of total demand. However, what’s truly noteworthy is the growing contribution from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, which now make up almost 40% of the market. Cities like Chandigarh, Jaipur, Lucknow, and Indore are fast becoming new hotspots for luxury car aspirations, proving that premium dreams are no longer confined to metro skylines.
Commenting on the findings, Avneet Singh Kohli noted that the shift is being fuelled by a new wave of young entrepreneurs, startup professionals, and digital content creators who are achieving financial milestones earlier in life. As income streams diversify and grow—often powered by social media and digital platforms—luxury car ownership is increasingly becoming an extension of personal brand and lifestyle.
Founded in 2010, Autobest Emperio has positioned itself as a key player in India’s pre-owned luxury car ecosystem, focusing on curated offerings and building trust in a segment that thrives on both aspiration and assurance.
The broader takeaway is clear: India’s luxury car market isn’t just expanding—it’s evolving. And as younger buyers continue to rewrite the rules of success, the pre-owned segment is emerging as the perfect gateway. After all, why wait till 50 to buy your dream car when your Instagram reel just went viral at 30?
