AM/NS India to Launch India’s First High-End Automotive Steel Production Lines by 2025

Hazira/New Delhi – ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), a joint venture between global steel giants ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, is set to transform the automotive steel landscape in India. By 2025, the company will commission two cutting-edge production lines dedicated to advanced automotive steel manufacturing at its flagship Hazira plant in Gujarat.

This initiative marks a significant milestone in India’s journey toward self-reliance, substituting imports of high-end automotive steel with indigenous production. These facilities, featuring a Continuous Galvanizing Line (CGL) and a Continuous Galvanizing and Annealing Line (CGAL), will incorporate proprietary technologies from AM/NS India’s parent companies, enabling the production of premium steel offerings, including several being introduced for the first time in India.

Advanced Technology and Indigenization

The new production lines, part of the Cold Rolling Mill 2 (CRM2) complex, will support the manufacturing of high-strength steel products up to 1180 MPa in both coated and uncoated variants. This development is expected to revolutionize the automotive sector by providing high-quality, locally-produced materials that meet global standards, reducing dependency on imports.

Dilip Oommen, CEO of AM/NS India, emphasized the strategic importance of this expansion. “These state-of-the-art units underscore our commitment to delivering world-class steel solutions tailored for India’s rapidly evolving automotive sector. Our innovations will not only enhance our product portfolio but also fortify India’s steel ecosystem, aligning with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision.”

Driving Growth in Automotive Steel

India’s demand for flat steel in the automotive sector is currently estimated at 7.8 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), with an annual growth projection of 6-7%. The commissioning of these facilities positions AM/NS India to capitalize on this growth while enhancing its market share and competitiveness.

Building on last year’s successful introduction of Optigal® and Magnelis®, the company aims to expand its offerings with high-performance steel solutions that cater to diverse automotive applications.

Showcasing Innovation at Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025

As part of its efforts to drive innovation, AM/NS India is exhibiting its advanced automotive solutions at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in New Delhi. Highlights include six cutting-edge components, such as the next-generation door ring and an advanced battery pack, designed to meet the critical needs of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).

The showcased innovations feature ArcelorMittal’s Multi Part Integration™ (MPI) solutions, which offer cost efficiency, streamlined manufacturing, and modular adaptability for various automotive applications. These solutions prioritize sustainability, weight reduction, and enhanced safety, aligning with Bharat NCAP (BNCAP) norms.

A Leap Towards Self-Reliance

The launch of these advanced facilities represents a pivotal step in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in high-end steel production. By promoting innovation, sustainability, and global competitiveness, AM/NS India is poised to shape the future of the automotive steel sector and drive India’s economic growth.

As the automotive industry gears up for transformation, AM/NS India’s groundbreaking initiatives reaffirm its role as a key player in empowering India’s manufacturing ecosystem and advancing the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ mission.
