The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is rolling out a cutting-edge GIS-based software system aimed at improving traffic flow at toll plazas nationwide. In an initial phase, around 100 toll plazas, identified based on congestion data gathered through the 1033 National Highway helpline, will be equipped with this new technology. The system is designed to provide live updates on traffic conditions, alerting officials when vehicle queues exceed designated limits and offering lane distribution recommendations to ease the congestion.
Developed by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), the software will provide key details such as real-time queue lengths, waiting times, and vehicle speeds at toll plazas. NHAI officials will have access to insights on traffic conditions, with analysis available on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis. This data will help streamline operations and enhance the efficiency of toll collection.
The platform also integrates information on current weather conditions and local festivals, allowing NHAI to implement proactive traffic management measures during peak periods. By tracking and addressing traffic bottlenecks, the live monitoring system is expected to ensure smoother tolling experiences for travelers, reducing delays and congestion on India’s national highways.
As the system expands to more toll plazas, it marks a significant step toward modernizing India’s highway infrastructure for seamless, hassle-free travel.
