NEW DELHI: Kia India has released the first official images of the India-spec Sorento and begun local production of the premium three-row SUV at its Anantapur plant, ahead of its formal launch on September 4, 2026. The Sorento will become Kia’s first hybrid SUV in India and will also be offered with a diesel powertrain.
The company said the first locally manufactured Sorento rolled off the production line on Thursday, marking another expansion of Kia’s premium SUV portfolio in the country. Pre-bookings have already opened through Kia India dealerships and the company’s official website.
The Sorento will enter India with a hybrid powertrain paired with All-Wheel Drive, making it Kia’s first hybrid AWD SUV for the Indian market. A diesel version will also be available, allowing the company to address buyers looking for electrified efficiency as well as those who continue to prefer diesel for longer-distance driving and highway use.
Kia has not yet announced detailed powertrain specifications, variant structure or pricing for the India-bound Sorento. Those details are expected closer to its official launch.
Kia Sorento brings three-row premium SUV push to India
The Sorento sits among Kia’s established global SUV nameplates and will give the company a presence in a more premium three-row SUV category in India.
The first official images show an upright, substantial SUV with pronounced proportions and contemporary styling aligned with Kia’s newer global design direction. The company is positioning the model as a premium family SUV, with greater emphasis on space, equipment and technology than its mainstream offerings.
Local production could also prove important to the Sorento’s positioning in India. Kia’s Anantapur facility has served as the company’s principal manufacturing base in the country since production began there in 2019.
With the Sorento now joining the production line, the plant will be responsible for assembling one of Kia’s more premium global products for the domestic market.
Live Generative AI to make global Kia debut in India
One of the Sorento’s more unusual talking points will be its Kia AI Assistant, powered by Live Generative AI.
According to Kia India, the Sorento launching here will become the first Kia model globally to introduce the technology. The company also claims it will be the first implementation of Live Generative AI in the Indian automotive industry.
Unlike a conventional voice assistant built around a relatively fixed set of commands, Kia says the system will support more conversational interactions and provide access to real-time, continuously updated information.
Exactly how much of that capability will be available at launch — and how naturally it handles the many accents, languages and wonderfully unpredictable requests encountered in an Indian car — will become clearer once the system reaches customers.
Speaking on the reveal and commencement of production, Gwanggu Lee, Managing Director and CEO, Kia India, said, “The Sorento has long stood as a global symbol of Kia’s SUV leadership, earning the trust of customers across international markets and becoming one of Kia’s most established flagship SUV nameplates. Its arrival in India marks a defining moment for our premium portfolio. With the first locally produced Sorento rolling off the production line at our Anantapur facility today, we are taking an important step in bringing this globally acclaimed premium flagship SUV to Indian customers. As Kia’s first hybrid SUV for the country, complemented by a powerful Diesel powertrain, Sorento reflects our commitment to offering customers meaningful choice. The Sorento launching in India will also be the first globally to introduce Live Generative AI, marking another important milestone for Kia and a first for the Indian automotive industry. These first images are only a glimpse of what’s to come as we prepare to introduce the Sorento to India.”
Hybrid and diesel strategy broadens Kia’s powertrain mix
The Sorento also signals a broader shift in Kia India’s powertrain strategy. Until now, the company’s Indian portfolio has largely centred on conventional internal-combustion models alongside dedicated electric vehicles.
Adding a hybrid SUV gives Kia another route into electrification without requiring customers to depend entirely on charging infrastructure. At the same time, retaining a diesel option acknowledges the continuing appeal of compression-ignition engines among buyers of larger SUVs, particularly those covering substantial highway distances.
The combination could help Kia address two distinctly different customer groups with the same model rather than betting exclusively on one propulsion technology.
The company has yet to disclose fuel-efficiency figures, battery specifications, engine outputs or the precise AWD configuration of the hybrid version.
India launch scheduled for September 4
The Kia Sorento will officially debut in India on September 4, 2026, with bookings already underway.
Its eventual price will be a particularly important part of the equation. The Sorento is entering a market where buyers of premium three-row SUVs increasingly expect a mixture of strong road presence, advanced technology, high equipment levels and credible long-distance ability — preferably without requiring an instruction manual the size of a telephone directory.
By assembling the Sorento locally, offering both hybrid AWD and diesel powertrains and introducing its new generative-AI interface in India first, Kia is giving the model a distinctly India-focused launch strategy. The remaining questions — specifications, variants and, most importantly, price — will determine how effectively that strategy translates from the factory floor to the showroom.
