AIDA Cheers India’s First Mass-Market Flex Fuel Vehicle as Ethanol Finally Gets Its Big Driveway Moment

New Delhi: India’s clean mobility journey has received a fresh ethanol-powered push, with the All India Distillers’ Association applauding the launch of India’s first mass-market flex fuel vehicle by Maruti Suzuki.

The industry body, which represents India’s ethanol, bioenergy and potable alcohol sector, called the launch a defining moment for cleaner transportation, energy self-reliance and farmer-linked economic growth. The new vehicle is designed to run on 100 percent pure ethanol, giving India’s biofuel ambitions a very real set of wheels.

In a significant vote of confidence, several AIDA member companies are also set to become among the early buyers and adopters of the newly launched flex fuel vehicle. In other words, the ethanol industry is not just clapping from the sidelines; it is getting into the driver’s seat, quite literally.

According to AIDA, the launch marks a major step towards mainstreaming flex fuel mobility in India. It also supports the Government of India’s broader objectives of reducing crude oil imports, lowering vehicular emissions, strengthening energy security and promoting cleaner alternatives in the transport sector.

For years, AIDA has advocated wider adoption of flex fuel vehicles and ethanol-based mobility solutions. The association has worked with policymakers, automobile manufacturers, fuel retailers and industry stakeholders to highlight the environmental, economic and strategic benefits of ethanol-driven transportation.

Vijendra Singh, President, AIDA, said, “The growing participation of automobile manufacturers, fuel retailers, ethanol producers, policymakers and industry stakeholders clearly reflects the strong national momentum behind cleaner mobility solutions. The fact that AIDA member companies themselves are becoming early adopters of these vehicles sends a strong signal of confidence in the future of flex fuel mobility in India.”

The development comes at a time when India is steadily expanding its ethanol ecosystem, with the fuel increasingly seen as a key pillar in the country’s clean energy transition. Higher ethanol adoption can help reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels while creating fresh demand for agricultural feedstocks such as maize and sugarcane.

Kushal Mittal, Vice President, AIDA, described the launch as more than just an automotive milestone. He said, “The launch of a mass-market flex fuel vehicle is not just an automotive milestone, it is a transformational moment for India’s clean energy journey. Ethanol-based mobility has the potential to significantly reduce crude oil dependence, lower carbon emissions and create sustainable economic opportunities for Indian farmers and rural communities.”

AIDA also highlighted that ethanol-based mobility can support rural employment, strengthen agricultural value chains and help improve farmer incomes. In simple terms, the fuel in the tank could increasingly have a direct connection with India’s farms, making the journey from field to fuel pump more important than ever.

Bharati Balaji, Deputy Director General, AIDA, said, “India today is not only focusing on ethanol supply expansion, but is also actively working towards creating robust demand-side adoption through initiatives like flex fuel mobility. This balanced ecosystem approach is critical for the long-term success and scalability of the ethanol programme.”

The association stated that flex fuel vehicles can play a transformative role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality by enabling greater use of ethanol in transportation fuels. It added that the move strongly complements the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat by promoting domestic biofuels, reducing import dependence and accelerating India’s shift towards indigenous energy solutions.

AIDA also acknowledged the continued policy support being provided by the Government of India for ethanol blending, biofuels and alternative fuel mobility. The launch saw participation from stakeholders across the automotive, energy, ethanol and policy sectors, underlining the collaborative effort behind India’s cleaner mobility roadmap.

As the country moves towards higher ethanol blending targets and broader adoption of cleaner transportation technologies, AIDA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting a robust, scalable and future-ready ethanol economy.

For India’s mobility sector, the message is clear: the road to cleaner transport may not smell like petrol forever. It may soon carry the sweet scent of sugarcane, maize and a very ambitious biofuel future.
