Mumbai: Tata Motors Limited reported total sales of 252,642 units in Q4 FY 2024-25, reflecting a 4.7% decline compared to the 265,090 units sold during the same quarter in the previous financial year. While year-on-year performance dipped marginally across both commercial and passenger vehicle segments, the company remains optimistic, buoyed by growth in strategic areas such as EVs, CNG, and green mobility.
Segment Performance: PVs and CVs Show Mixed Trends
Passenger Vehicle (PV) sales stood at 146,999 units, showing a 6% decline YoY, as the industry witnessed moderation in demand. Commercial Vehicles (CVs) also registered a 3% decline, closing the quarter at 105,643 units.
However, specific sub-segments told a different story. The domestic sales of Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicles (MH&ICVs) grew to 20,474 units in March 2025, slightly up from 19,976 units in March 2024. For the full quarter, MH&ICV sales rose to 51,551 units, up from 50,643 units YoY. Including international markets, MH&ICV sales in Q4 stood at 53,995 units, a modest rise from 52,186 units last year.
Leadership Speaks: Strategic Growth and Innovation at the Forefront
Girish Wagh, Executive Director at Tata Motors, struck an optimistic tone, stating that the CV industry ended FY25 on a “positive note,” after recovering from earlier demand softness. The company recorded wholesales of 376,903 units in the CV category for the full fiscal, supported by higher growth in trucks and commercial passenger carriers.
He highlighted Tata’s sustainability-first approach, referencing the launch of India’s first hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck trials and a massive milestone for Tata’s e-bus fleet, which has now collectively covered over 30 crore kilometers.
Looking to FY26, Wagh pointed to tailwinds such as lower crude prices, interest rate cuts, and infra project spending as catalysts for sustained growth, while also flagging new regulations like mandatory truck AC cabins as potential cost headwinds.
Passenger Vehicles: Punching Above Weight in a Cautious Market
Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., acknowledged a challenging environment in FY25, but celebrated strong strides in SUVs, CNG, and EVs. The company posted 5,56,263 PV unit sales, including 64,726 electric vehicles.
Tata Motors led industry growth in both the SUV and CNG segments, with the Tata Punch emerging as India’s No. 1 SUV in FY25 for private buyers. Key launches like the Curvv, Nexon CNG, and refreshed Tiago were well-received, bolstering Tata’s reputation for innovation.
Notably, Tata crossed 6 million cumulative PV sales and 2 lakh EV sales, marking significant milestones.
Outlook: Tata Bets on Innovation and Electrification
Both business leaders highlighted the importance of customer-centric innovation and a multi-powertrain strategy to navigate the evolving landscape. SUVs, CNG, and EVs are expected to remain central to Tata Motors’ growth, driven by rising consumer demand and policy support for cleaner mobility.
With several new nameplates in the pipeline and a focus on digital integration and green technologies, Tata Motors is preparing to maintain its momentum into FY26—even as macroeconomic and geopolitical variables continue to shape the auto sector’s trajectory.
