There are two kinds of convertibles in the world.
One is the sensible convertible — small, calm, economical, driven by people who enjoy sunsets and herbal tea.
And then there’s the BMW M440i Convertible.
A car that looks at sunsets and says, “Nice. Now watch me hit 250 kmph with my hair absolutely ruined.”
This is BMW’s German open-top grand tourer, and honestly, it feels less like a car and more like a luxury missile wearing Italian loafers.
The BMW 4 Series was first introduced globally in 2013, and what you’re looking at here is the second-generation 2026 BMW 4 Series Convertible, internally known by its codename — G23. In India, BMW offers only one petrol variant of the convertible: the M440i xDrive Convertible, priced at around ₹1 crore ex-showroom. If your bank account laughs at such numbers, BMW also has the hardcore M4 Coupe starting from ₹1.58 crore. That car is for people who think normal sports cars are “a little too relaxing.”
The 4 Series shares many of its underpinnings and features with the BMW 3 Series, because BMW knows a good recipe shouldn’t be wasted. Underneath, it sits on BMW’s CLAR LK platform — a platform so versatile that it also underpins the 2 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, X3, X4, Z4, Toyota Supra and even the Boldmen CR4. It’s basically the automotive equivalent of that one overachieving cousin who somehow excels in every field.
And because this is a Completely Built-Up Unit imported from Germany, the car carries that special German aura. The kind that makes you feel even your parking mistakes should be engineered precisely.

Exterior Design: Controversial? Yes. Forgettable? Never.
Let’s address the giant kidney-shaped elephant in the room.
The front grille.
Inspired by the legendary 1930 BMW 328, the vertically stretched kidney grille on the 4 Series caused more internet debates than pineapple on pizza. Designed by Seungmo Lim, this grille doesn’t ask for attention. It kidnaps it.
Finished in black high-gloss with the M Sport Pro treatment, it looks aggressive, dramatic and slightly offended at the existence of traffic. And honestly, in person, it works. Especially in this stunning Fire Red shade. Other colours include black, grey, white, green and blue, while BMW’s special request programme can paint it in almost any colour your imagination — or wallet — allows.
The 4 Series Convertible is based on the striking BMW Concept 4, and thankfully BMW didn’t dilute the drama too much for production. The silhouette resembles the elegant BMW 8 Series, giving the car a proper premium GT stance.
You get Adaptive LED Matrix headlights with blue accents, dynamic light functions, high beam assist and dynamic range control. The lighting setup feels so advanced that the car probably judges streetlights for being technologically inferior.
The M Aerodynamics package sharpens the overall appearance further, while rain-sensing wipers, automatic anti-dazzle mirrors and electrically foldable ORVMs add everyday usability.
Dimension-wise, this isn’t a tiny sports car pretending to be practical. At 4.7 metres long, 1.8 metres wide and weighing almost 2 tonnes, the 4 Series Convertible has real road presence. Yet somehow, BMW has managed to make it look athletic rather than bulky.
And then there are the wheels.
19-inch M light alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tyres — 225-section at the front and wider 255-section at the rear. Behind them sit red high-gloss M Sport brakes that look ready to stop continental drift.
At the rear, things get even more dramatic.
The black high-gloss diffuser, titanium quad exhausts and stunning M4 CSL-style laser LED taillamps make the car look like it’s permanently preparing for a high-speed escape scene in a Hollywood movie.

Roof Mechanism: Theatre On Demand
Now comes the best part.
The roof.
At speeds up to 50 kmph, you can electrically open or close the fabric roof in just 18 seconds. Which means if sudden rain appears, you don’t need panic. You simply press a button and continue pretending you’re important.
The bow-style roof construction is also far lighter than traditional hardtop systems, helping improve weight distribution and handling.
And yes — when the roof is down, every fuel station becomes a photoshoot location.

Interior: Business Class With Launch Control
Step inside and the BMW immediately changes character.
Outside, it looks like a nightclub bouncer. Inside, it feels like Lufthansa First Class.
The cabin is loaded with black Sensatec perforated upholstery, though red and brown themes are also available. Ambient lighting, metallic detailing and BMW’s superb build quality create an interior that feels genuinely premium.
The curved widescreen display dominates the dashboard, combining a 12.3-inch M-specific instrument cluster with a massive 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system running BMW Operating System 8.5.
And unlike some luxury cars where technology feels unnecessarily complicated, BMW’s system is genuinely intuitive.
You get:
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Voice control
- Intelligent Personal Assistant
- 3D Maps navigation with real-time traffic
- Remote software updates
- eSIM connectivity
- MyBMW App integration
- Augmented reality navigation through the Head-Up Display
The Head-Up Display deserves special mention because it projects route guidance, media information and driving data directly onto the windshield. It’s the closest thing to driving a fighter jet without joining the Air Force.
The Harman Kardon 12-speaker 408-watt surround sound system sounds absolutely phenomenal. Roof down, music up, inline-six engine growling in the background — suddenly your grocery run feels like a music video.
The front sport seats are electrically adjustable and come with lumbar support, while M seat belts add a sporty touch that reminds you this isn’t just a luxury cruiser.
There’s also a proper 385-litre boot and a Through Loading System, making the 4 Series surprisingly practical for long road trips. Because apparently BMW wanted you to carry luggage while looking impossibly stylish.
Performance: The Legendary B58 Symphony
Now we arrive at the heart of the experience.
The engine.
And oh dear lord, what an engine this is.
Under the hood sits BMW’s legendary 3.0-litre inline-six turbocharged B58 petrol engine with 48-volt mild hybrid assistance.
0\text{-}100\ \mathrm{km/h}=4.8\ \mathrm{s}
Producing 392 horsepower and 540 Nm torque, this motor launches the M440i Convertible from 0-100 kmph in just 4.8 seconds before continuing all the way to an electronically limited top speed of 250 kmph.
That’s supercar-fast from not very long ago.
And the beauty of the B58 isn’t just speed. It’s character.
This engine feels smooth at low speeds, relaxed during highway cruising and utterly savage when pushed hard. It has won Ward’s 10 Best Engines award five times, and after driving it, you completely understand why.
Interestingly, this same engine is also found in the BMW 2 Series, 3 Series, X3, X4, Z4, Toyota Supra and Boldmen CR4. The high-performance version of this engine is called the S58 — used in proper M cars.
Power is sent through BMW’s brilliant xDrive all-wheel-drive system paired with an Active M Differential and an 8-speed ZF M Steptronic automatic gearbox with Drivelogic.
Honestly, this gearbox deserves a standing ovation.
It shifts smoothly in Comfort mode, aggressively in Sport mode and violently enough in Sport Plus mode to rearrange your internal organs slightly.
Driving Experience: Gentleman By Day, Maniac By Night
The biggest surprise about the M440i Convertible is how balanced it feels.
BMW has achieved near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution, and combined with Adaptive M Suspension, bespoke chassis tuning and the electronically controlled M Sport rear differential, the car feels remarkably composed.
Comfort mode turns the car into a refined luxury cruiser.
Sport mode sharpens responses.
Sport Plus mode essentially asks:
“Would you like mild legal complications today, sir?”
The Electronic Power Steering and Variable Sport Steering system provide excellent precision, while the chassis remains beautifully stable even during fast cornering.
Despite weighing nearly 2 tonnes, the car hides its mass incredibly well. Grip levels are enormous, traction is relentless and the car always feels eager.
And because this is a convertible, the experience becomes emotional in a way closed-roof cars simply cannot replicate.
An inline-six engine at 5000 rpm with the roof down on an empty highway feels less like transportation and more like therapy.
Very expensive therapy.
Safety & Technology
BMW hasn’t forgotten safety either.
The 4 Series has scored a full 5-star rating in both Euro NCAP and Australian NCAP crash tests.
Safety equipment includes:
- 6 airbags
- ABS with Brake Assist
- Dynamic Stability Control
- Cornering Brake Control
- Dynamic Brake Control
- Park Distance Control
- 360-degree camera
- ISOFIX mounts
- Tyre Pressure Monitoring
- Crash sensor
- Attentiveness assistant
- Side impact protection
- Active Protection system
The car also includes Brake Energy Regeneration and multiple intelligent driving systems working silently in the background.
Ownership Experience
BMW offers a 2-year warranty with 2 years of 24×7 roadside assistance.
Interestingly, BMW Financial Services also promises up to 63% buyback value after 3 years or 10,000 km usage — which sounds reassuring until you realise nobody buying this car will stop at 10,000 km. You’ll invent excuses just to drive it.
Final Verdict
The BMW M440i Convertible is not a rational purchase.
And thank God for that.
It’s dramatic, loud-looking, fast, luxurious and unapologetically attention-seeking. It combines German engineering precision with old-school open-top motoring charm in a package that feels genuinely special every single time you drive it.
Yes, the grille remains controversial.
Yes, ₹1 crore is serious money.
And yes, Indian roads occasionally treat low-slung luxury cars like obstacle courses designed by angry civil engineers.
But none of that matters when the roof folds away, the B58 engine sings and the car rockets forward with the kind of smooth brutality only BMW knows how to deliver.
The BMW M440i Convertible isn’t just transportation.
It’s a moving celebration of speed, style and slightly irresponsible happiness.
