Honda Brings a Double Dose of Sportiness to India with New City and Hybrid SUV ZR-V e:HEV

Honda Cars India has decided 2026 is not the year to play safe. The Japanese carmaker has launched the New Honda City while simultaneously introducing the globally successful Honda ZR-V e:HEV premium hybrid SUV to India, calling them its “Two Sporty Icons.” In simpler words, Honda has shown up with one sedan that refuses to age and one SUV that looks ready to steal parking-lot attention from everything else around it.

The announcement also marks the beginning of what Honda calls its “new phase of accelerated growth” in India, with six strategic launches planned this year. That’s a busy calendar even by smartphone-launch standards.

The updated Honda City continues its long-standing mission of reminding India that sedans are still cool. The new model gets sharper styling, a redesigned front fascia with Blade Eye Signature LED lighting, connected light bar, new aerodynamic bumpers, fresh alloy wheels and updated interiors. Honda says the design philosophy is called “Sharpen,” which sounds less like a car theme and more like advice before a board meeting.

Inside, the City now gets a larger 10.1-inch floating touchscreen, ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, USB-C charging ports and a 360-degree camera. Honda Sensing ADAS also makes its way into the package with features like Collision Mitigation Braking System, Lane Keep Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control.

Under the hood, customers can choose between the familiar 1.5-litre petrol engine or Honda’s strong hybrid e:HEV setup. The hybrid variant produces 126 PS and 253 Nm while delivering a claimed fuel efficiency of 27.26 km/l. That’s the sort of mileage figure capable of making diesel owners suddenly develop an interest in electrification.

The petrol version continues with a 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed CVT. Honda claims fuel efficiency figures of up to 17.97 km/l for the petrol CVT variant.

But the bigger headline grabber of the day was undoubtedly the India debut of the all-new Honda ZR-V e:HEV, a premium hybrid SUV imported from Japan as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). Globally, the ZR-V has already crossed 8 lakh cumulative sales since 2022, and Honda clearly believes India’s premium SUV buyers are ready for something more sophisticated than oversized grilles and unnecessary chrome.

Built around the philosophy of “Brilliant Liberation,” the ZR-V combines sporty styling with hybrid performance and premium comfort. Honda says the SUV is designed to offer a sedan-like driving feel while retaining the commanding visibility of an SUV — essentially trying to please both enthusiasts and people who just want to see over traffic.

Powering the ZR-V is Honda’s 2.0-litre e:HEV Sports Hybrid system producing 184 PS and 315 Nm. Claimed fuel efficiency stands at 22.79 km/l, which is impressive for an SUV of this size and performance. The hybrid system automatically switches between EV, Hybrid and Engine modes depending on driving conditions.

The SUV also packs a healthy amount of premium kit including a 12-speaker Bose audio system, fully digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay, powered seats, hands-free tailgate, ambient lighting and a long list of safety features including eight airbags and Honda Sensing ADAS.

Honda has also focused heavily on cabin practicality, offering up to 1313 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded flat. In true SUV fashion, this means the ZR-V should comfortably carry luggage, camping gear or approximately half the contents of a modern Indian wedding.

Speaking at the launch, Takashi Nakajima, President & CEO of Honda Cars India, said India is now among Honda’s top three focus markets globally and confirmed that a strong pipeline of new products is on the way. The company clearly wants to regain momentum in a market increasingly dominated by SUVs and electrified mobility.

The New Honda City is already available at dealerships across India with deliveries beginning immediately, while bookings for the ZR-V e:HEV have opened ahead of deliveries scheduled from July 2026.

With the City sharpening its suit and the ZR-V arriving in full hybrid swagger, Honda seems determined to remind India that sporty driving and sensible fuel economy can still coexist peacefully — preferably in the same showroom.
