Hyundai Revives Thandalam Village Pond with ₹1.73 Crore Investment, Boosts Water Security for 1,500 Residents

Kancheepuram: In a country where water is often treated as precious as petrol during a road trip, Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF) has decided to top up the tank—this time for nature. The CSR arm of Hyundai Motor India Limited has inaugurated a rejuvenated community pond in Thandalam village, located in the Kundrathur block of Kancheepuram district, marking another step in its growing commitment to water security and sustainable community development.

The restoration project, completed under Hyundai’s H2OPE initiative, represents an investment of ₹1.73 crore and significantly boosts the pond’s storage capacity to 21,840 cubic meters. In simpler terms, that’s enough water to make a meaningful difference in the lives of local residents and the surrounding ecosystem—especially during those months when monsoon clouds decide to play hide-and-seek.

The rejuvenation effort was far more than a cosmetic makeover. The pond underwent scientific desilting to remove years of accumulated sediment, strengthening of bunds to prevent erosion, and stone pitching along vulnerable edges. Engineers also created revetments to stabilise the banks, while a protective compound wall was built to safeguard the restored waterbody. LED lighting now illuminates the area, and a community walking pathway ensures that the pond doubles as a public space where villagers can take evening strolls while keeping an eye on their newly revived lifeline.

Beyond aesthetics, the project addresses a deeper challenge—groundwater depletion. By improving rainwater harvesting and recharge capacity, the restored pond will help stabilise groundwater levels, enhance water availability for domestic and agricultural needs, and improve resilience during water-stressed periods. For the approximately 1,500 residents of Thandalam village, the pond is not just a scenic landmark but an essential resource that quietly supports everyday life.

The rejuvenated pond was formally handed over to the village panchayat during a ceremony attended by Thiru T. M. Anbarasan, Honorable Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, along with District Collector Tmt. D. Sneha IAS, local panchayat representatives, villagers, and Thiru Gopalakrishnan C.S., Trustee of the Hyundai Motor India Foundation.

Speaking at the event, Gopalakrishnan C.S., Whole-time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer at Hyundai Motor India Limited and Trustee at HMIF, emphasised that water security is fundamental to community resilience. He highlighted that the ₹1.73 crore investment under the H2OPE initiative is not merely about restoring a waterbody but about strengthening livelihoods, improving groundwater recharge, and ensuring long-term environmental sustainability. According to him, Hyundai’s global vision of “Progress for Humanity” continues to guide the company’s approach toward meaningful community development.

The Thandalam project is part of a broader water stewardship strategy under the H2OPE program, through which HMIF has revitalised several community waterbodies across Tamil Nadu, including those in Sriperumbudur, Paraniputhur, and Irrungattukottai. Each restoration contributes to improved groundwater recharge, ecological revival, and long-term environmental balance.

For Thandalam village, the pond’s revival signals more than infrastructure—it represents renewed hope. And while Hyundai is best known for building cars that move people from one place to another, initiatives like this prove the company is equally committed to ensuring communities have the resources they need to stay firmly grounded—especially when it comes to something as vital as water.
